Meghan Markle turned 45 on Tuesday, marking the occasion with a mahjong-inspired two-tiered birthday cake that was revealed on social media by her close friend, fashion designer Tracy Robbins.
Ms Robbins shared the image on her Instagram alongside several photographs of the pair together, writing: “Happy birthday to my partner in crime. Love doing life with you one bam bird at a time. Love you @meghan.”
The “bam bird” is a reference to a tile used in the ancient Chinese strategy game.
The cake bore the Duchess of Sussex’s name in gold icing.
In one photograph, Meghan was pictured blowing out the candles whilst wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat and her £4,145 Logan Hollowell Queen Emerald Cut Cuban Choker.

Meghan has long been passionate about mahjong, regularly playing with a circle of close friends who have dubbed themselves the “Maj Squad.”
The game featured prominently in the first series of her Netflix lifestyle programme, With Love, Meghan, during which she hosted Robbins, cosmetics entrepreneur Victoria Jackson and literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh for a session accompanied by tacos and cocktails.
Tatcha skincare founder Vicky Tsai, another close friend of the couple, spoke to People magazine last year about the Duchess’s enthusiasm for the game.
“She’s constantly trying to pull me into her weekly mahjong group,” Tsai said. “And she and Harry are pretty passionate about pickleball. They are trying to convince me to join the group!”

The Duchess of Sussex’s mahjong circle expanded earlier this summer when Kelly McKee Zajfen, co-founder of the non-profit Alliance of Moms, joined for an outdoor game in June.
Zajfen, a former model who has been friends with Meghan for two decades, posted a photograph on Instagram of herself playing with cocktails in the sunshine.
“Ugh, oh. Another one has been taken by the Maj bug. That being me,” she wrote. “A perfect day spent with my ladies and having some much-needed mama time.
“Thanks M & T. Now back to the babes and obsessing over my next game.”
Robbins responded on her Instagram, telling Zajfen: “You are a natural. Love you. Miss you already.”
Beyond the mahjong festivities, the duchess thanked her followers “for the birthday love” on Instagram, sharing a photograph of herself leaping into an outdoor swimming pool.
She also posted a series of videos showing her dancing to a birthday song, with clips capturing her and Prince Harry placing paper hats on their two dogs, Pula and Mamma Mia.
Her lifestyle brand As Ever joined the tributes, publishing an image of Meghan in a Céline shirt and white Anine Bing “Brie” jeans alongside a childhood throwback showing a young Meghan.
“Happy birthday to our founder, @meghan. Lighting No. 084 to celebrate!” the brand wrote, referencing one of its own candles.
