Experts are calling on the Government to roll out new measures as soon as possible to give drivers confidence in making the switch to electric vehicles.
InstaVolt has urged Labour to set out a clear timetable for the rollout of improved electric vehicle charging signage standards.
The issue has frequently been identified as a key barrier in helping drivers make the transition away from petrol and diesel cars by giving them confidence in the public charging network.
It comes after planning permission by InstaVolt was blocked by the Government after they attempted to display a non-functional, advertising wind turbine at its flagship Winchester Superhub.
The chargepoint operator, which is the leading ultra-rapid EV charging network in the UK, submitted an application in November 2025 to “draw attention to the persistent failure to provide adequate roadside signage”.
Planning permission for the signage was denied, despite it being the largest single-operator ultra-rapid charging hub in the country.
The Winchester Superhub is located just off the A34 near the M3, and contains 44 ultra-rapid chargers, on-site battery storage and even an 870-panel solar array.
The site lacks clear signage for drivers to locate it, with InstaVolt saying this is a national issue and reflects a clear issue with the Government’s electric vehicle strategy.

INSTAVOLT/GETTYDelvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, said the private sector was meeting its end of the deal to expand the network of electric car chargers, but that the Government needed to do more.
He continued, saying: “We’ve faced an ongoing battle with signage, and we know more can be done.
“We’re doing everything we can to make charging simple and convenient for drivers, but too often people still struggle to find charging locations easily.
“That creates unnecessary friction for drivers and risks slowing wider EV adoption.”

Labour has previously pledged to reform electric vehicle charging signage as it continues on the journey to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
InstaVolt has warned that poor signage could have a drastic impact on driver confidence in the public charging network, especially as millions of drivers will need to rely on public chargers.
It noted that this is down to delivery, rather than ambition, with InstaVolt installing almost 3,000 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers across the UK.
Decisions on signage for individual sites rest with local highway authorities and councils, rather than central Government.

InstaVolt has now called on the Government to outline a clear timeline to implement improved electric vehicle charging signage standards.
It has also demanded that Labour work with local highway authorities to ensure that major public charging sites are properly signposted on the strategic road network.
Mr Lane concluded, saying: “The Government has been clear that improving signage for EV charging is a priority. A year on, we are still waiting for that to translate into action.
“Drivers deserve better, and the wider EV transition depends on it. We will keep making that case until something changes.”
