State pensioners under the age of 80 in England and Wales are set to receive automatic £200 Winter Fuel Payments later this year after the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) confirmed the eligibility rules for 2026.
The payments will be issued during November and December 2026 to help older households cover heating costs during the colder months.
With the 2026-27 tax year now underway, the DWP has outlined who qualifies for this year’s support and how much pensioners can expect to receive.
Most eligible pensioners will not need to submit a claim because the payment will be made automatically.
To qualify, pensioners must have been born before June 27, 1960 and live in England or Wales.
Those born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960 will receive £200 towards their winter heating bills.
Pensioners aged 80 or over, meaning those born before September 28, 1946, will receive a higher payment of £300.
The DWP confirmed the amounts apply to eligible pensioners living alone.

However, the amount received could differ for those claiming certain means-tested benefits.
Pensioners receiving Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance may receive different payment amounts depending on their circumstances.
Overall, Winter Fuel Payments range between £100 and £300 depending on eligibility and household arrangements.
The DWP said most pensioners already receiving qualifying benefits will receive the money automatically during November or December.

Some pensioners may still need to make a claim directly.
This applies to people who have never previously received a Winter Fuel Payment or those who have deferred their state pension since their last payment.
The DWP will send letters to eligible pensioners during October or November confirming payment amounts and bank account details.
The department stated: “Most payments are made automatically in November or December.
“You should get a letter telling you how much you’ll get and which bank account it will be paid into – this is usually the same account as your State Pension or other benefits.”
Anyone who has not received their payment or confirmation letter by January 27, 2027 has been advised to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
The DWP also confirmed that pensioners with total incomes above £35,000 will have the payment recovered through HMRC.
This will take place either through adjustments to tax codes or through Self Assessment tax returns.
Pensioners who do not wish to receive the payment can opt out before the September deadlines set by the DWP.
The deadline for completing the online opt-out form is 11.50pm on September 20, 2026, while those choosing to opt out by phone must contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before 6pm on September 18, 2026.
