Shabana Mahmood has been handed a bleak assessment of her record so far in the Home Office the day after hundreds of migrants reached the shores of Dover.

On Wednesday, more than 250 illegal migrants made the crossing while smugglers took advantage of the hottest day of the year so far.

Joining GB News this afternoon, Jack Hadfield, who directed a 2021 documentary on the illegal migrant crisis called Destination Dover, ripped into Labour’s record on the matter.

“Destination Dover sums it up at the moment, doesn’t it?” presenter Dawn Neesom said with a grimace, citing the latest figures.

“[Labour’s] attracting people to British seaside towns, I guess,” Mr Hadfield quipped back.

On a more serious note, he continued: “Obviously, we will see the numbers continue to go up as the weather improves.

“As it becomes less choppy seas, calmer weather, people are going to be more likely to wanting to make the crossings now.

“But obviously there’s no point in looking at the numbers on the individual days.”

At least 56 migrants arrived in the Dover harbour on a Border Force vessel just after 10am, GB News revealed on Wednesday.

Three more migrant boats made the perilous crossing while the sun shone down on Britain in the hours that followed.

Later on in the day, just after 3pm, the Border Force vessel Typhoon unloaded another 82 at the migrant processing centre in Dover, taking the total for the day to 261.

But the number will continue to rise as several more days of good weather in the Channel this week are expected to see hundreds more small boat migrants attempt to reach Britain, GB News’s Home and Security Editor Mark White forecast.

Meanwhile, Mr Hadfield went on to criticise the Home Secretary’s policies, insisting they were “not making a difference”.

GETTY

Ms Mahmood’s latest set of migration reforms designed to clamp down on illegal crossings fell under fire from both left-wing and right-wing MPs for either being too lax or too stringent.

But part of the fury stemmed from a trial scheme, outlined in Labour’s latest plans, which would hand out up to £40,000 to families of failed asylum seekers to leave the UK.

The scheme aims to save British taxpayers’ money spent on housing migrants in Britain, aiming to save the Government up to £20million a year.

But the director did not seemed convinced by the effectiveness of the policy, telling GB News: “Some people here might maybe take the lump sum cash and go home, how much cash could they extract from the British state over the course of their lifetime?

“Maybe it’s not necessarily worth it for them to do that – rather than going back to Afghanistan or keep suckling off the British taxpayers’ teat here instead.”

On Ms Mahmood’s wider record in the Home Office, Mr Hadfield blasted the “one-in, one-out” scheme.

“So far, 377 people have been returned to France and we’ve taken 380. So this entire scheme has been a net of plus three. So no matter what Shabana Mahmood is doing here, it’s not making a difference,” he blasted.

“British immigration policy, when it comes to small boat crossings, is not being set by the will of Shabana Mahmood, but clearly by the will of Poseidon.”
