West Yorkshire Police have launched a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man in Huddersfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were alerted by the ambulance service at 4.14pm on Tuesday, January 20 to reports of a knife attack on Greenwood Street in the Primrose Hill area of the city.

Emergency crews discovered the young man lying in the street suffering from a serious wound.

Despite being rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team is now leading the inquiry into the killing, with cordons remaining in place across Greenwood Street and nearby Armitage Street whilst detectives continue their work.

Five men have been taken into custody in connection with the death, all arrested from the Orchard Street area on suspicion of murder.

The suspects range in age from 48 to 61 and are currently being held for questioning.

Forensic investigators have established a tent at the scene on Greenwood Street as evidence gathering continues.

Part of Armitage Street has also been sealed off as detectives piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Specially trained officers are providing support to the victim’s family during this difficult time.

Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson said: “Multiple enquiries are continuing into this very serious incident which has sadly resulted in a young man losing his life.

“We are well aware of the concern any such incident causes in communities and our neighbourhood policing team colleagues are conducting reassurance patrols in the area today.”

The senior detective added her team is focused on determining exactly what led to the fatal confrontation in the residential neighbourhood.

DCI Atkinson urged anyone who witnessed suspicious activity or heard anything unusual around Greenwood Street or Orchard Street during Tuesday afternoon to come forward.

Investigators are also keen to hear from residents who may have noticed any disturbances or concerning behaviour in either street over the preceding days.

Those with mobile phone footage or dashcam recordings from the area are encouraged to make contact with the inquiry team.
