The force was called to the scene at about 20:25 GMT on Sunday with the road shut for several hours

A man shot and killed by police after officers responded to a two-vehicle crash has been named as Tony Keeble.

Norfolk Police was called to the collision in London Road, Thetford, at about 20:25 GMT on Sunday.

Mr Keeble, 61, from Thetford, died when officers shot him twice as they believed he was carrying a handgun, which he was ordered to drop, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The IOPC said a non-police issue firearm was recovered from the scene and there was no indication any of the officers may have potentially breached the police standards of professional behaviour.

A post-mortem was carried out with a provisional cause of death given as gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

A date for the opening of the inquest is yet to be scheduled, the IOPC added.

Investigators established that following the crash, a man was seen with a handgun and left the scene.

Armed officers were deployed and found him on the side of the A11, shortly before 21:00.

Two officers both fired a single shot, striking the man.

The IOPC said first aid was provided and paramedics were called, but Mr Keeble was declared dead at the scene.

The IOPC obtained initial statements from the officers involved, who were being treated as witnesses, and said it would be taking further detailed statements as part of the investigation.

Amanda Rowe, the director of the IOPC, said she understood the public concern over the incident and that there would be questions around the circumstances.

She explained that was “why it’s important that we carry out a robust and thorough independent investigation”.

“Our investigation remains in its early stages and we are still gathering and reviewing evidence as we work to establish the full circumstances,” she said.

“Our sympathies remain with everyone affected by this incident.

“We have contacted Mr Keeble’s family and will be meeting with them to explain our role and ensure they are kept updated as our investigation progresses,” she added.
