A wide range of payments, benefits and discounts are available to those at retirement age, but many people may not be aware they are entitled to.

These range from Government financial support to savings on travel, shopping, healthcare and leisure.


Here is a full list of the benefits people can access incase you’ve missed any.

The state pension is the core entitlement for most people, paying £230.25 a week to those who have built up sufficient national insurance contributions.

People begin receiving the state pension at age 66, which is the current qualifying age for both men and women.

Pension credit

Pension credit provides additional financial support for pensioners on lower incomes.

Single people can receive up to £227.10 a week, while couples may be entitled to as much as £346.60.

Attendance allowance

Attendance allowance is available to those who need help with personal care due to illness or disability.

This benefit is worth up to £110.40 a week depending on the level of support required.

Healthcare support

Healthcare support increases once people reach later life.

Anyone aged 60 or over is entitled to free NHS prescriptions.

NHS eye tests are also provided free of charge from age 60.

Dental treatment is not automatically free for pensioners under NHS rules.

However, free NHS dental care may be available if someone or their partner receives certain benefits.

These include pension credit, guarantee credit, income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income-related employment and support allowance or universal credit.

People receiving pension credit guarantee credit or other qualifying benefits may also be entitled to free wigs or fabric supports through the NHS.

Energy support

Some energy suppliers offer free gas safety checks to customers aged over 65.

These checks are typically available through the supplier’s Priority Services Register.

Travel costs

Travel costs can reduce significantly for people aged 60 and over.

The senior railcard is available from age 60 and provides a third off most rail fares across Great Britain.

An annual railcard costs £35, while a three-year card is priced at £80.

People aged over 60 can also receive a 10 per cent discount on Interrail passes, allowing train travel across 33 European countries.

Bus travel is free for people aged 60 in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and London with a concessionary bus pass.

In England outside London, the free bus pass generally becomes available at state pension age.

National Express offers a senior coachcard for people aged over 60.

The card provides a third off standard and fully flexible fares to hundreds of UK destinations, including airports.

Drivers aged over 60 can access reduced motoring costs through certain schemes.

ATS Euromaster offers Club 60 membership, reducing MOT test prices to £27 and providing 15 per cent off vehicle servicing.

Retail discounts

Retailers also operate age-related discount schemes.

Boots offers eight points for every pound spent on its own-brand products and selected exclusives through its over-60s rewards scheme.

Iceland provides a 10 per cent discount every Tuesday for bonus card holders aged 60 and over.

Specsavers offers 20 per cent off glasses when customers buy from its £70 range or above.

Entertainment tickets

Cinema and theatre discounts are also widely available.

Odeon runs a Silver Cinema Club for older customers, with tickets starting from £3.50 and including refreshments before the screening.

The National Theatre offers up to £20 off midweek matinee performances for people aged over 60.

The Royal Shakespeare Company provides a 20 per cent discount on Monday and Tuesday evening shows and midweek matinees for those aged 65 and over.

The Savoy Theatre and Theatre Royal Glasgow also offer concessionary pricing for senior audiences.

Several football clubs provide reduced-price tickets for older supporters.

Arsenal offers discounted senior season tickets, while Liverpool FC provides concessions for fans aged 65 and over.

Sheffield United offers concession pricing to supporters aged 60 and above.

Fans of Chelsea FC can get reduced prices if they’ve reached state pension age

West Ham United and Chelsea FC both offer reduced prices to fans who have reached state pension age.

Chelsea allows eligible supporters to book discounted seats for home cup and UEFA competition matches.

Hotel discounts

Hotel chains also provide age-related discounts.

Marriott offers reduced rates for guests aged 62 and over.

Hilton provides savings of up to six per cent for travellers aged 65 and above.

Radisson typically offers 10 per cent off standard room rates for older guests.

Charity support

Practical support is also available through charities.

More than 70 Age UK branches operate handyperson services to help older people with small home repairs and security improvements.
