Kemi Badenoch has dismissed claims she is bullying Rachel Reeves, saying politics is a “rough and tumble sport” and not a school playground.

In a explosive clash at the House of Commons earlier this week the Tory leader mocked the Chancellor for “wallowing in self-pity” and accused her of “whining about mansplaining” and misogyny.

Her comments came after Mrs Reeves unveiled plans to raise £26billon via tax rises in a Budget that also saw her scrap the two-child benefit cap.

Speaking to GB News, the Conservative MP insisted Labour likes to dish out criticism but struggles to take it.

“I would say that Labour likes to dish it out, but they can’t take it. Every single week, I have Keir Starmer saying one thing or another to me.

“I don’t complain about it I deal with it and get on with the job, which is politics. It is a rough and tumble sport.

“Rachel Reeves is the Chancellor of the Exchequer. She’s not a school prefect, she’s not a librarian, she’s the second most powerful person in the country, and she is doing a bad job.

“If she thinks that anyone telling her she’s not doing a good job is complaining because she’s a woman, then she is deluding herself.”

She added: “I think it’s bad for women. If we see senior women in public life complaining about mansplaining, it makes it look like we’re not up to the job.

“She herself said ‘I’m the first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. I want to be a role model to young girls.’

“I’ve got two daughters, and what I want them to see is strong women doing their jobs, not spending all their time talking about how they’re a woman and how people are being mean to them.

“It’s a distraction from what she was elected to do, which was to fix the economy.

“All she’s done is make the economy worse, and if she had any decency, she would resign, because she’s broken a hell of a lot of promises.”

In the Commons on Wednesday, Mrs Badenoch said: “God help us! She is spineless, shameless and completely aimless.

“Her speech today was an exercise in self-delusion. Today she had an opportunity to apologise and show some humility.

“All we have had is wallowing in self-pity and whining about misogyny and mansplaining.

“So let me explain to the Chancellor, woman to woman, that people out there are not complaining because she is female; they are complaining because she is utterly incompetent.

“Real equality means being held to the same standard as everyone else.”
