Council-run fireworks displays will return to Manchester on Bonfire Night next year.
Manchester City Council said free displays and bonfires would take place for the first time since 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced eight parks run by the local authority to cancel their previously annual events.
Town Hall bosses said increased central government funding would mean fireworks can return, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
Council leader Bev Craig said: “Manchester prides itself on free community events and we know many people have missed Bonfire Night firework spectaculars – we are pleased to confirm they’ll be back by popular demand in 2026.”
She added: “We know that generations of Mancunians have enjoyed council-organised displays and that free family events are a great way to bring people together.
“That’s why when funding was squeezed we sought to support a wider range of community events over a longer period.”
The council said the displays’ return would be formally confirmed next week, when the local authority receives detailed information about how much money it will receive in 2026-27 from central government.
Town hall chiefs believe they will secure more money than in recent years since ministers are changing funding formulas to recognise greater challenges in economically deprived areas.
Craig added: “In the coming months we will talk about our investments in communities, cleaning our streets, frontline services, young people and many more initiatives that will make Manchester better.
“For now, here’s one example of reversing cuts to our city and building up for a spectacular 2026.”
