Council’s Poynton Pool works decision delayed amid trees row | Manchester News

A decision about whether a number of trees should be cut down at a popular Cheshire beauty spot has been postponed.

Cheshire East Council (CEC) said measures to improve safety and reduce the risk of flooding at Poynton Pool would potentially involve the removal of several trees.

The plans were due to have been discussed at a council meeting this month, but the local authority said it needed to “make further refinements” and promised to present an updated version of its proposals “at the earliest opportunity”.

Campaigners who had put forward an alternative plan said any “material changes” should be made available for public consultation.

Poynton Pool is an ornamental pond dating back to about 1750 and is classed as a high-risk reservoir because of the amount of water it contains.

CEC said an inspection of the pool in recent years concluded that safety improvements were required.

The proposed loss of trees drew protests from the local community.

CEC deferred making a decision in April 2024 to allow for more investigation work.

Labour MP Tim Roca said he had formally objected to the planned work in his Macclesfield constituency, describing the proposals as “harmful”.

He said he could see “no clear and demonstrable effort” from CEC to explore alternative plans.

“I appreciate that in recent months the council has demonstrated willingness to engage with the community and campaigners on this issue.

“Unfortunately the impending deadline for action means this engagement has come far too late,” said Roca.

The Friends of Poynton Pool campaign group submitted an alternative plan for the beauty spot.

Chairman Mike Ellison said his group was told last month that the council’s original plans would go back before the authority’s strategic planning board.

But Mr Ellison said he was told weeks later that the local authority would be making “refinements” to the application.

“We believe that any material changes… should be made available for public consultation,” he said.

“The community is preparing to fight this proposal in the courts.”

Planning documents show CEC has been given a legal deadline of the end of this year to sign off proposals for the works, and that they must be completed by the end of 2026.

If not, the council could be at the risk of enforcement action and prosecution by the Environment Agency.

The next scheduled meeting of the council’s strategic planning board is due to take place at the end of January.

CEC said the delay followed recent discussions with the local planning authority and community representatives.

“The council remains committed to developing a solution for Poynton Pool that continues to meet the statutory requirements and ensures public safety, while also considering the concerns raised by the community,” said a spokesperson.
