A learner driver has finally passed their theory test after a staggering 75 attempts, with another spending almost £3,000 on tests, shocking new data shows.
New statistics from AA Driving School found that one learner driver has taken the theory test 128 times without passing, spending an enormous £2,944.
Another learner eventually passed their test following 74 failed tests, although they only spent £1,700 in fees.
Each theory test attempt costs £23, with the successful driver who passed on their 75th try spending a total of £1,725.
Young motorists and learner drivers must pass the theory test before they can book a practical exam to get their licence.
The theory test assesses drivers’ knowledge of the road and safe driving practices, as well as their ability to identify hazards in videos.
The DVSA recently announced that it would be adding new questions to the theory test as part of a new partnership with the Save a Life partnership and the Resuscitation Council UK.
The new questions will ask applicants about CPR and how to use a defibrillator in a bid to reduce strain on the NHS and give drivers additional medical knowledge.

Emma Bush, managing director at AA Driving School, said preparation was key to ensuring that drivers pass the test the first time.
However, she acknowledged that “life can get in the way”, with “extra nerves and time pressures” being felt on the day of the exam.
The expert continued saying: “Passing your theory test is the first step towards achieving your full driving licence, and clearly these candidates who have attempted it multiple times are very committed to achieving their goal.
“There are lots of reasons why someone might find the theory test challenging and therefore rack up multiple attempts before they pass, though it’s important to remember a high number of attempts is the exception, not the rule.”
In terms of the practical driving test, the highest number of attempts before passing last year was 21.
Depending on when the individual took the tests, it could have cost them between £1,302 and £1,575, according to DVSA data.
Experts have been particularly insistent on drivers only taking their practical test when they have the backing of their instructor and they have had enough time to learn how to drive.
The driving test booking system has come under severe pressure in recent years, with motorists forced to wait months for an available test or even travel hundreds of miles to get their licence.

PAThe data, which was obtained through a Freedom of Information request, found that two people have taken their practical test 37 times without passing, potentially spending up to £2,200.
In 2024/2025, the pass rate for the theory test was 44.9 per cent, while the practical test had a success rate of 48.7 per cent.
Ms Bush continued, saying: “For the practical test, the best advice to prevent you having to take your test multiple times is to work with your instructor to book a test when they think you are ready to pass.
“If nerves are getting the better of you, doing some practical mock tests with your instructor may also help.”
