Brad Arnold, the founding member and lead vocalist of American rock band 3 Doors Down, has died at the age of 47.

The musician passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday morning following a battle with cancer, his bandmates confirmed.

Mr Arnold’s wife Jennifer and other family members were at his bedside when he died.

The band announced the news through their Instagram account, describing their “heavy hearts” at sharing the loss of their founder, frontman and songwriter.

A representative for Mr Arnold confirmed he died surrounded by loved ones after what the band called his “courageous battle with cancer.”

His death comes nine months after he publicly revealed his terminal diagnosis.

Mr Arnold revealed his diagnosis in May 2025 through a video posted on social media.

He told fans he had been unwell for several weeks before hospital tests confirmed he was suffering from clear cell renal cell carcinoma – the most common form of kidney cancer – which had spread to his lung.

“It’s stage four, and that’s not real good,” he said in the announcement, before expressing his unwavering faith. “We serve a mighty God, and he can overcome anything. So I have no fear. I really sincerely am not scared of it at all.”

The diagnosis forced the band to cancel their planned 2025 summer tour alongside Creed, Nickelback and Daughtry.

Mr Arnold co-founded 3 Doors Down in 1996 in Escatawpa, Mississippi, serving as both the original drummer and vocalist. He penned the lyrics to their breakthrough single Kryptonite during a maths lesson when he was just 15 years old.

The track, released in 2000, reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, earned a Grammy nomination, and has since accumulated more than 1.2 billion streams on Spotify.

The band’s debut album, The Better Life, became the 11th best-selling record of that year.

His bandmates praised Mr Arnold for helping to “redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners.”

The band’s statement emphasised that Mr Arnold was “above all” a devoted husband to Jennifer, whose kindness, humour and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Mr Arnold had previously struggled with alcoholism before achieving sobriety in 2016. The family of the late country musician Charlie Daniels revealed last year that Mr Daniels had “saved Brad’s life” by helping him enter rehabilitation.

His bandmates Chris Henderson, Greg Upchurch, Chet Roberts and Justin Biltone said those closest to Mr Arnold would remember “not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends.”

The family has requested privacy during this difficult period. Mr Arnold is survived by his wife Jennifer.
