Gary Anderson produced a near-flawless display as he thrashed Ryan Joyce to reach the last-16 of the World Matchplay in Blackpool.

Scotland’s Anderson, the 2018 champion, delivered spectacular finishes of 144 and 141 as he cruised to a 10-2 victory at Winter Gardens.

Former world champion Anderson averaged 109.96 and won the last five legs with Englishman Joyce having no answer.

“The trebles were going in, the doubles were going in, the checkouts were going in – when it happens like that you can’t do anything wrong,” said Anderson.

“Ryan’s just come up against it. You get those days when you can throw with your eyes shut and hit everything, and that was one of those days.”

Anderson, who is the 12th seed, sets up a second round match against Welsh fifth seed Jonny Clayton after he beat Australia’s Damon Heta 10-7.

Clayton rounded off his victory with a superb 144 finish before describing last-16 opponent Anderson as his “hero”.

Elsewhere, three-time champion Michael van Gerwen beat Andrew Gilding 10-6 to set up an encounter against fellow Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode, who ousted Chris Dobey 13-11 in a thriller.

In the evening session, Dutch third seed Gian van Veen made it safely into the second round with a 10-6 against Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski.

He will play fellow Dutchman Wessel Nijman after the 14th seed eliminated England’s Dave Chisnall 10-5.

Sixth seed James Wade defeated Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena 10-7 to set up a contest against fellow Englishman Ryan Searle, after the 11th seed beat Ireland’s William O’Connor 10-6.
