Fatty liver disease is deemed dangerous because it quietly takes hold without you ever realising something’s wrong. The condition doesn’t produce distinctive symptoms in the early stages, and when signs do appear, they’re often easy to brush off.

Kelsey Pabst, a registered nurse and Medical Reviewer at Cerebral Palsy Centre, told GB News that if there are symptoms, they tend to be “mild fatigue or an increased sense of being unwell”.

Many cases are only spotted by chance when blood tests or ultrasounds are carried out for completely unrelated health matters.

You might expect liver problems to come with obvious pain, but that’s not how fatty liver disease works in its early stages.

Pabst explained: “Early fatty liver is generally not associated with sharp pain. Some people may experience a dull, heavy pain below the right ribs, but most feel nothing at all.”

The liver contains very few pain nerves, meaning damage can occur without any physical discomfort alerting you to the problem.

“So you may not realise you have been damaged; normal lab results don’t always mean a healthy liver,” Pabst added.

What symptoms might raise a red flag before anything shows up on tests?

Fatigue is the most common complaint, but things like bloating and brain fog can also crop up. The tricky part is that these symptoms are incredibly vague and could easily be chalked up to stress or dietary choices.

Pabst noted: “These signs do not indicate fatty liver, but in people who are obese, have diabetes, or high cholesterol, they suggest that a closer look is warranted.”

She noted that it’s the overall pattern of symptoms that matters rather than any single warning sign on its own.

When fatty liver disease starts progressing to more serious conditions like NASH or cirrhosis, the warning signs become much harder to ignore.

Pabst outlined the red flags to watch for: “Warning signs are increased fatigue, weakness, bleeding easily, swelling, jaundice, or confusion.”

For anyone who already knows they have fatty liver, certain symptoms demand immediate medical attention.

Pabst stressed: “If you’ve known you had fatty liver and have swelling, jaundice, or mental changes, it’s urgent. Earlier action can prevent reaching this stage.”

The message is clear: catching these signs early and acting quickly can make all the difference in preventing serious liver damage.
