Wetherspoons is set to kick off the new year with a major price promotion, offering pints for under a pound at hundreds of its venues across the country.

The pub chain will launch its January sale on Friday January 2, with Worthington’s beer available for just 99p at more than 600 locations.

Scottish branches will begin the promotion a day later on Saturday, January 3.

Customers will have nearly a fortnight to take advantage of the reduced prices, with the sale continuing through to Thursday January 15.

The deal represents a significant saving on the beer’s usual price of £1.49 per pint, according to the company.

Wine lovers can pick up a 250ml glass of Coldwater Creek varieties – including Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, rosé and Merlot – for £2.99 each during the promotional period.

Spirits are also heavily discounted, with Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky and Tanqueray gin both priced at £1.99 for a 25ml measure with mixer included.

Those participating in Dry January or simply cutting back on alcohol will find plenty of options too.

The chain is selling eight different low and no-alcohol beverages at £1.69 apiece, ranging from Guinness 0.0 and Corona Cero to Gordon’s 0.0 pink gin and Thatchers Zero cider.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Beck’s Blue and Sanpellegrino Aranciata Rossa come in even cheaper at 99p each.

The food menu features equally competitive pricing, with an 11-inch Margherita pizza or crunchy chicken burger served alongside chips or a side salad for £4.99 when ordered with a soft drink, rising to £6.52 with an alcoholic beverage.

Mr Martin expressed confidence the promotion would attract customers

Jacket potatoes offer six filling choices – tuna mayo, coleslaw, chilli bean non-carne, cheese, baked beans or roasted vegetables – at the same price points. An additional topping or side salad costs 99p extra.

Three new gourmet jacket options are joining the menu during the sale. The loaded spud comes topped with cheese, maple-cured bacon, garlic butter and sour cream, while the Mexican version features chilli bean non-carne with guacamole and crushed tortilla chips.

A smoky variety includes pulled BBQ beef brisket. These premium options cost £6.49 with a soft drink or £8.02 with alcohol.

Wetherspoons founder and chairman Tim Martin drew comparisons with the retail sector when explaining the timing. “Department stores and shops hold their sales in January, so it is the perfect time to also have a sale in the pubs,” he said.

Prices may differ at approximately 200 other Wetherspoons venues

He added: “The range of food and drinks on sale in the pub is aimed at suiting a wide variety of tastes. We have included a large selection of low-alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks.”

Mr Martin expressed confidence the promotion would attract customers, stating: “I believe that the January sale will prove popular with customers. As always, staff at the pub will serve customers responsibly.”

Prices may differ at approximately 200 other Wetherspoons venues, including central London locations.
