As nationalist politicians in Cardiff Bay push their agenda for Welsh independence, and headlines continue to spiral about the Duke of Sussex’s latest tell-all interview, King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince William showed what real leadership looks like today.

Just hours after hosting Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman for a major State Visit at Windsor Castle, the King, who turns 78 next month, and Queen Camilla, 79, packed their schedules, boarded a helicopter, and flew straight to South Wales to mark the solemn 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster.

Joined by Prince William, the senior royals stood shoulder-to-shoulder with survivors, first responders, and grieving families at the Aberfan Memorial Garden, built directly on the former site of Pantglas Junior School.

Exactly 60 years on from that horrific morning on October 21, 1966, when a colliery spoil tip collapsed and swallowed 144 lives, including 116 school children, the emotional scars across the Valleys remain deep.

The late Queen Elizabeth II famously carried the heavy personal weight of her delayed initial visit as the single greatest regret of her 70-year reign.

When her private secretary, Lord Charteris, was once asked whether the monarch held any personal regret from her reign, his single-word answer was “Aberfan.”

That painful lesson taught the Palace the importance of immediate presence during moments of national tragedy.

Charles and Camilla’s immediate journey from Berkshire to Aberfan showed an ironclad commitment to Wales that completely exposes the hollow rhetoric of Welsh separatists.

Last month, a Welsh independence march took place in Aberystwyth calling to break up the Union, supported by Plaid Cymru and YesCymru.

During said march, the YesCymru leadership team issued the following statement: “There is a growing national conversation about what comes next for Wales.

“Our task is to keep independence at the heart of that conversation, build majority support and secure an independence referendum by 2032.”

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS

YesCymru director Ethan Jones has publicly stated: “Cards on the table… I am a committed Welsh Republican. I want to see an independent Wales and I want it to be a republic…

“Our membership contains republicans, monarchists, and a segment who don’t have a firm view either way. YesCymru reflects this by being committed to entrusting the electorate of a future independent Welsh state with the question.”

Against this backdrop, as well as Prince Harry continuing his endless public media campaigns to air private grievances, the working royals simply got on with the job today.

Meeting with survivors like Jeff Edwards, who was pulled from the rubble as an eight-year-old pupil at Pantglas, and listening to the Ynysowen Male Voice Choir, the King and Prince William proved that the Crown remains an essential anchor for national unity during times of grief and remembrance.

Prince William concluded the emotional visit by unveiling the Aberfan Memorial Tree at Ynysowen Community Primary School, a new steel sculpture created by local craftsmen to ensure future generations never forget.
