Drivers are facing long delays on a busy motorway this afternoon following a vehicle fire, National Highways has warned.

The M1 in South Yorkshire is closed southbound between J36 (Tankersley) and J35 (Rotherham) due to a fire involving a van.

Traffic officers from National Highways are in attendance at the scene and assisting with traffic management.

The transport organisation added that all emergency services were at the scene of the vehicle fire.

Warning drivers on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, National Highways: Yorkshire issued an update.

It stated that there are currently delays of around 40 minutes and four miles of congestion on the approach.

Drivers travelling on the A616 southbound, who wish to join the M1, should instead join the A61 Westwood New Road northbound at the Westwood Roundabout.

From here, they should follow the A61 northbound towards the M1J36 roundabout and follow the signposted diversion route.

GB News has contacted South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for comment.

National Highways said: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
