A man has died after a van plunged over a cliff onto a beach at a British seaside town.

Sussex Police said it was called at about 4.30pm after a vehicle drove 160ft off Friars Bay in Peacehaven, Lewes.

The victim has not been formally identified, but the force said the coroner’s office has been informed.

Authorities remain at the scene and have been carrying out enquiries near Seaview Road, which has been tapped off to members of the public.

According to The Argus newspaper, a section of fencing in front of the road that protects people from the cliff has been damaged.

A spokesman for the police said they “received a report of a van going over the cliff edge at Peacehaven at about 4.30pm on Wednesday, July 1”.

The statement went on to say: “The van was located and the driver, a man who is yet to be formally identified, was sadly found deceased.

“Police are investigating the full circumstances of this tragic incident and the coroner’s officer has been informed.
