“The UK will continue to support Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression,” Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has said.
She told GB News: “In terms of the British government’s position, we stand steadfast behind the Ukrainian people, behind the Ukrainian government.
“That was the case under the last Conservative government and there was cross-party support in the face of Russian aggression. For the Ukrainian people, we continue to maintain that position.
“As we enter almost the 1,000th day of the conflict, I think it really brings into sharp focus the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people.
“The Prime Minister and the Defence Secretary, from our point of view, will always continue to keep under review what is necessary by way of military aid for the Ukrainian people
“We’ll continue to make sure that Ukrainian people have what they need in standing up to Russian aggression.
“That has been our long-standing position…that we will continue, because this is about European security and democracy in the face of this illegal war.”
She added: “The Prime Minister is today travelling to the G20 where he will maintain our position of resolute support for the Ukrainian people.
“But I’m the Education Secretary in the government. I’m not the Prime Minister or the Defence Secretary, so there are limits to what I can set out to you today as policy changes.
“I’m sure that that will be if policy were to change, and when policy changes, it’s for those individuals to set out our position as a government. I’m sure you can appreciate that.”
