The UK economy grew by 0.5 per cent between April and June, revised up from a previous estimate of 0.4 per cent, the Office for National Statistics said.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) this morning shows that stronger export volumes and an upwardly revised services sector drove this growth.

Economic growth is primarily measured using Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which tracks the total value of all goods and services produced in a country.

The new figures follow 0.6 per cent growth in the previous quarter.

The modest growth likely means people are spending more.

The small increase comes amid Labour’s plans to stimulate growth.

Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves has repeatedly said that economic growth is the number one mission.

She called it the only route to improving living standards and public services.

The war in Iran and rising unemployment have driven inflation in Britain higher.

Policies introduced in Labour’s first two budgets have been blamed for increased business costs, resulting in falling number of jobs.

These include employer National Insurance hikes and higher minimum wage requirements.

Liz McKeown, ONS director of economic statistics, said: “Today’s figures include our annual improvements to the measurement of the economy, incorporating new information that provides a better picture of activity across the UK’s service sector, alongside the usual inclusion of updated and improved data sources.

“Growth for 2025 as a whole was a little lower than previously estimated, with the profile of growth across the quarters also revised.

“However, stronger services growth in the latest quarter means the economy is now slightly larger than previously estimated.”
