Two people have been hospitalised after a small plane crashed into a field near a Northamptonshire village.

The aircraft was grounded just off Moulton Road between Pitsford and Moulton.

Emergency services are in attendance.

Moulton Road has been closed, and access remains restricted.

The crash occurred this afternoon shortly before 4pm.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police told GB News: “We were called to a report of light aircraft crash near Pitsford, at around 3.50pm on Friday, June 5.

“Two people have been taken to hospital for treatment, and an investigation into what happened has begun.

“The Air Accidents Investigation Branch have been informed.”

Northampton has deep ties to aviation through its military air bases, manufacturing history, and the local airfield.

The region was historically dotted with military airfields, hosting the American 8th Army Air Force and the RAF.

During World War Two, Sywell Aerodrome, located just 6 miles from the town, was used to train pilots and to produce and repair hundreds of Wellington bombers.

It remains unknown what aircraft was involved in the incident.

The crash comes just days after the fatal Royal Navy helicopter crash that claimed three lives in Devon.

The Merlin Mk4 helicopter went down at approximately 3.45am on Wednesday near Okehampton during a training exercise.

All three crew members, who were stationed at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, lost their lives in the incident.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the identities of the three personnel who died in the crash.

Lt Cdr Chris Gayson, aged 42, was among those killed alongside Lt Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, and Petty Officer Owen Green, 24.

The Defence Accident Investigation Branch will conduct the inquiry into the incident.

Tributes have flooded in for the three fallen personnel, including from Sir Keir Starmer, the King and Princess of Wales.

Defence Secretary John Healey, Commander of Joint Aviation Command, Air Vice-Marshal Lee Turner, RAF and Commanding Officer of Commando Helicopter Force (CHF), Colonel Will Penkman, also shared touching words.
