Two 25-year-old men have died while taking part in the Great North Run, race organisers announced.
The two men, both from the North East, collapsed during the event while competing on the 13.1-mile route.
The event organisers said the two runners died despite the “best efforts” of the medical teams.
In a statement the Great Run Company said: “Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the two participants.
The two men were both aged 25

“We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them.”
Organisers confirmed they will not release further details out of respect for the men’s families.
Some 63,000 runners took part in the event, which is now in its 45th year.
