Tram services are due to return to normal on Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network on Monday after two weeks of major disruption.

Improvement works have taken place at Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar, as well as in Manchester city centre, meaning no services ran on three Metrolink lines over that time.

A spokesman for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) confirmed the work was on schedule to have been completed.

However, passengers have been warned that some minor route changes through the city centre will remain in place until Wednesday, with travellers advised to check the TfGM website, external.

Vernon Everitt, Greater Manchester’s transport commissioner, told Radio Manchester’s Hot Seat programme the works would be “the last big closures for a while”.

“Unfortunately there’s never a good time to do these closures and I do apologise, but everyone will reap the benefits of it.”

He said the upgrades would mean trams can move more quickly and reliably, but acknowledged the disruption had “been a pain for people” and said work had gone into making sure replacement buses ran “better than ever”.

He added: “We’ve just got to fix the roof while the sun is shining.”
