Sophie Turner has been forced to take a break from filming Amazon MGM Studios’ highly anticipated Tomb Raider series after sustaining a minor back injury on set.

The streaming giant confirmed the production halt in a statement, saying: “Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury.

“As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”

Filming on the live-action adaptation of the beloved video game franchise commenced in January, with the 30-year-old Game of Thrones star taking on the iconic role of archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.

The series marks the first television adaptation of the property, which previously spawned films starring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

According to reports, Ms Turner’s injury stems from a pre-existing back condition that has worsened under the demanding filming schedule since production began in January.

The physical toll of portraying Lara Croft appears to have pushed the actress beyond her limits.

A source told Page Six: “Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the grueling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far.”

Ms Turner herself revealed in January that she had discovered her “perpetual back problem” during the extensive training regime she undertook in preparation for the role.

The actress previously admitted that building the necessary muscle had been particularly challenging, having never worked out before taking on the part.

Production is anticipated to resume in roughly a fortnight, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Deadline reports that crew members will continue to receive their wages throughout the shutdown period, with preparatory work carrying on in Ms Turner’s absence.

The series is being filmed primarily in the United Kingdom, with Ms Turner spotted on location earlier this month shooting an intense action sequence.

Amazon MGM Studios first announced that cameras had started rolling on January 15, simultaneously releasing an image of Ms Turner in character wearing Lara Croft’s signature green vest, black shorts and red sunglasses.

It remains unclear whether the injury occurred during filming or elsewhere.

The ensemble cast surrounding Ms Turner includes Hollywood veteran Sigourney Weaver alongside Jason Isaacs, who portrays Lara Croft’s uncle Atlas DeMornay.

Bill Paterson takes on the role of Winston, the Croft family’s longstanding butler, whilst Martin Bobb-Semple plays Zip, the protagonist’s tech support and close companion.

Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein also feature among the supporting players.

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge developed the project and serves as writer, executive producer and co-showrunner, marking her most significant undertaking since her breakthrough comedy series.

Chad Hodge shares showrunning duties, with Jonathan Van Tulleken directing and executive producing.

The production is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Crystal Dynamics, Wells Street Films, Story Kitchen and Legendary Television.
