Michael Wright, the American actor best known for his portrayal of Eddie King Jr. in the 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats, has died at the age of 70.
Mr Wright died on Wednesday in Los Angeles after suffering heart failure combined with complications from Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare degenerative neurological condition, according to a family statement provided to TMZ.
His wife, Susan Wright, announced the news on Instagram on Friday evening, describing her husband’s death as an “enormous and deeply personal loss.”
In her Instagram tribute, Ms Wright wrote: “It is with profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in my heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright.”

She described him as “an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations,” adding: “His talent, presence, and contributions to film and television will live on, but to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for.”
The family urged the public and media to respect their need for space during this period, and asked that no unverified details be circulated on their behalf.
“Michael, your work will live forever, but your love will live even longer in the hearts of those who knew you best,” Susan concluded. “Rest peacefully, my love. You will be missed beyond words.”
The New York City native, who was born in 1956, built a career spanning more than four decades across film, television and theatre, amassing over 50 credits during that time.

Among the highlights on his resume were parts in Streamers, V, The Principal, and the HBO prison drama Oz.
Mr Wright’s most well-known role was that of Eddie King Jr., the gifted but self-destructive lead vocalist of a fictional R&B group in Robert Townsend’s The Five Heartbeats.
The film followed the group’s journey through the music industry, with Mr Wright’s character battling with alcoholism and drug addiction before eventually finding a path to recovery.
Before the career-defining stint in the film, Mr Wright had already earned international recognition for roles elsewhere.
His work in Robert Altman’s 1983 war drama Streamers saw him share the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival alongside his fellow cast members.
Mr Wright first appeared on screen in Philip Kaufman’s 1979 coming-of-age film The Wanderers, playing Clinton, the leader of the Del Bombers gang, in a story centred on rival teenage groups in 1960s New York.
On television, he became widely recognised as Elias Taylor in the 1980s science-fiction franchise V. He went on to play the role across two miniseries and a full series between 1983 and 1985.
His CV also included credits in the 1987 drama The Principal opposite James Belushi, Leon Ichaso’s 1995 crime film Sugar Hill alongside Wesley Snipes, as well as Money Talks, Point Black, and The Interpreter.

Post-millennium, Mr Wright held a significant recurring role as Omar White in HBO’s Oz from 2001 to 2003.
More recently, his later television appearances included the CW superhero series Black Lightning, where he played Lazarus Prime, along with guest roles in Miami Vice, Law & Order, and New York Undercover.
Mr Wright is survived by his wife, his children Manon Wright, Byron Barr, Brittney Briggs, Brianna Barr and Sir Barr, and a grandchild named Yoko.
