State pensioners across England, Wales and Northern Ireland can expect letters from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) with a major Winter Fuel Payment update.
Starting in October, eligible retirees will receive confirmation whether they will claim the energy bill support worth up to £300 to assist with heating bills over the colder months.
Those who qualify will see the money deposited directly into their accounts during November and December, requiring no action from most recipients.
Eligibility extends to pensioners born on or before June 27,1960, with payment amounts ranging from £100 to £300 depending on age and individual circumstances.

The qualifying week for this year’s payments falls between September 21 and 27 2026, and the DWP has urged anyone who believes they are eligible but does not receive a letter to check whether they need to submit a claim.
Those wishing to decline the payment by telephone must do so before 6pm on Friday September 18, while the online opt-out window closes at 11:50pm on Sunday September 20.
The DWP stated: “You can choose to opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment. If you do not opt out and your total income is over £35,000, you will receive the Winter Fuel Payment but HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will take it back. You cannot return it yourself.”
This means higher-earning pensioners who miss the deadlines will have no way to voluntarily send the money back.

Pensioners born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960 who live on their own are entitled to £200, while those born before September 28, 1946 qualify for the higher £300 amount.
Recipients of Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance may find their payment differs from the standard rates.
Scottish residents fall under a separate scheme, receiving a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment rather than the standard Winter Fuel Payment.
The DWP added: “The amount you get is based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 21 and 27, 2026. This is called the ‘qualifying week’. Any money you get will not affect your other benefits.”

Crucially, the payment has no bearing on any other benefits a pensioner currently receives.
The Government department shared: “For pensioners who exceed the income threshold, HMRC will claw back the Winter Fuel Payment through one of two mechanisms: either adjusting the individual’s tax code or adding the sum to their Self Assessment tax return.
“If your income is over £35,000 HMRC will take your Winter Fuel Payment back by either: changing your tax code; adding the amount to your Self Assessment tax return.”
Pensioners can verify whether their total income surpasses the £35,000 ceiling and determine which recovery method HMRC will apply in their case.
