Thousands of state pensioners are getting a helping hand with their shopping this week as £70 supermarket vouchers land in eligible households.

The vouchers are being distributed from today through to Thursday, giving vulnerable pensioners extra support with their food shopping as winter sets in.

The support is aimed at those on certain benefits who are feeling the pinch, with those eligible set to receive the payment automatically.

The money can be spent in supermarkets to help cover the cost of essentials during what can be a challenging time of year.

Funding runs until March 31, 2026 with local councils deciding how to distribute it, meaning eligibility rules may vary by area.

Wakefield Council in West Yorkshire has confirmed it will distribute £70 supermarket vouchers to pensioners receiving Council Tax Support.

The first round of vouchers will be issued between 4 and 6 November to those who no longer receive the Winter Fuel Allowance (i.e. not on Pension Credit).

A second round will follow from 11 to 13 November for pensioners who still receive the allowance (i.e. those on Pension Credit).

The support comes through the Government’s Household Support Fund, which targets vulnerable households during the colder months.

Pensioners who receive certain benefits are among those who can access this help with essential living costs.

Wakefield Council said: “Eligible households do not need to apply for these vouchers. They will be issued automatically. Please allow up to 14 days for the voucher to arrive.

“Full instructions on how to redeem the voucher will be included in the letter. Once the voucher has been redeemed, it doesn’t have to be spent all at once. It can be used several times until the entire amount has been spent.

“Please note that receipt of these vouchers will not affect entitlement to any other benefits you may be receiving.”

Local authorities have been given the flexibility to decide who qualifies in their area.

This means pensioners on specific benefits in one council area might receive support, while the criteria could be different just a few miles away.

The fund represents a £742million investment in supporting households across England.

Councils have been allocated their share of this funding to help residents with essential expenses like energy bills and food shopping.

Councils have the freedom to distribute the money in ways that best serve their communities’ needs.

Each local authority has been given the power to set its own rules about who qualifies for support.

This means eligibility can vary depending on where pensioners live.

What works in one area may differ in a neighbouring borough, as councils tailor their approach to local needs.
