A Sky News live broadcast from Middlesbrough descended into chaos on Friday morning when a member of the public disrupted a report on the wave of violence gripping the area.

Sky News’s Shingi Mararike was delivering an update on inquests into the deadly A66 collision when an individual entered the shot, shouting “the police killed them” and calling officers “rats”.

The reporter told viewers: “We’re going to have to stop this broadcast now because there is someone behind me.”

After producers intervened with the disruptive person, Mr Mararike attempted to resume, stating: “I will try and continue now, but I’m just holding off because we have been accosted by members of the public.”

More than 200 additional officers had been deployed to bolster Cleveland Police amid a series of violent incidents across the area.

The collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday 22nd August on the A66 dual carriageway in Middlesbrough.

PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough were travelling in a marked armed response vehicle when it was struck head-on by a Volkswagen Passat driving the wrong way down the road.

Both officers were killed, along with the five occupants of the Passat: Cole Worthy, Theo Ray, Makai Saddington, Michael Robbert Cahill and Jakub Matusiak.

All seven individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

The inquest heard that an “aborted” police pursuit had taken place prior to the crash, though neither PC Blades nor PC Clough had been “directly involved in” it.

The coroner confirmed he was awaiting a report from the Independent Office for Police Conduct alongside a police collision report.

Area Coroner for Teesside and Hartlepool Paul Appleton provided provisional causes of death for all seven victims during the inquest proceedings.

PC Blades died from head and neck injuries, while PC Clough’s death was attributed to neck injuries.

PC Blades was identified by his wife, and PC Clough was identified by his partner.

In separate hearings concerning the five young men, the coroner revealed that Mr Matusiak suffered fatal head and neck injuries, and Mr Worthy died as a result of head and chest injuries.

Mr Cahill’s death was caused by head and torso injuries, while both Mr Saddington and Mr Rae died from blunt head injury.

Unlike the officers, the five young men were identified through fingerprint analysis rather than by family members.

Mr Appleton indicated he was still awaiting full post-mortem examination reports before proceeding further.

The violence extended well beyond the A66 crash.

On Wednesday, August 26th, a woman and a seven-year-old girl lost their lives in a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, situated just a mile from the site of Saturday’s fatal collision. Investigations into the blaze were ongoing.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, another vehicle struck a wall outside a property on Steele Crescent in South Bank, only minutes from both previous scenes.

Hours later, a man was treated for stab wounds in Eston, roughly two miles from where the A66 crash took place.

The rapid succession of incidents prompted the deployment of more than 200 extra police officers to support Cleveland Police as the force grappled with the escalating situation across the Middlesbrough area.
