Sir Andy Murray has spoken warmly about the Princess of Wales, describing her as a genuine tennis enthusiast following their recent afternoon together at Wimbledon.

The three-time Grand Slam champion watched British player Katie Swan face Madison Keys alongside Catherine during this year’s Championships.

“Yes, it was a fun afternoon,” Murray told Hello. “She is definitely a tennis fan and she plays a bit herself, I think.”

The retired tennis star also revealed Catherine’s secret hobby.

“I think she also plays padel.”

He added: “We watched the Katie Swan and Madison Keys match, so it was good to be watching a British player together.”

Catherine’s love of tennis is well-documented, so her return to the All England Tennis Club in south west London this summer was a welcome sight.

She visited The Queue, where she spent time with tennis enthusiasts who had camped overnight in hopes of securing tickets.

The royal greeted fans warmly, posed for photographs, and personally handed out grounds passes to several lucky attendees.

Catherine also spent time with young people from Shine Camera Club.

The initiative harnesses creative photography to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She later made her way to Court 18 alongside former British No1 Tim Henman and All England Club chair Deborah Jevans, before joining Sir Andy at Court No1.

Sir Andy himself is soon to be immortalised on the grounds at Wimbledon. The All England Club is preparing to honour him with a life-size bronze statue as part of Wimbledon’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

David Williams-Ellis, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s stepfather, the acclaimed artist once hailed as “the greatest living sculptor working in portraiture”, has been named the sculptor.

Catherine, a well-known tennis enthusiast, holds responsibility for presenting trophies to the singles champions at the tournament’s conclusion.

In her role as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Catherine is expected to return to SW19 this afternoon for the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles final between compatriots Karolína Muchová and Linda Nosková.

There, the Princess of Wales will hand out the trophy to the victor. Last year, she delivered the coveted piece of silverware to Iga Swiatek after she beat Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 for her first Wimbledon title.

Catherine has served as royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016, establishing herself as a familiar figure at SW19.

Her attendance record stretches back to 2011, with only two absences: during her pregnancy with Prince George in 2013 and when the pandemic forced the Championships’ cancellation in 2020.
