The festive season brings plenty of joy and celebration, but it also means facing an endless parade of tempting treats.

Thankfully, PT and transformation coach Rachel Solway has shared her top tips for navigating Christmas without derailing your weight loss progress, insisting you don’t have to miss out on your favourite festive foods entirely.

“The festive season is full of joy, celebration and a lot of tempting treats. While it is absolutely possible to enjoy your favourite foods at Christmas, small and strategic swaps can help you stay aligned with your weight loss goals without feeling restricted,” she said.

“These alternatives still deliver on flavour and satisfaction. They are simply smarter choices that keep calories in check and hunger stable.”

7 festive food swaps that can make a real difference

When it comes to chocolate, Solway recommends ditching those seemingly bottomless tubs of Heroes, Celebrations or Roses in favour of a few squares of 70 per cent dark chocolate.

The richer, more intense taste naturally means you’ll eat less while still satisfying those cravings, and the lower sugar content helps keep your blood sugar stable.

As for pigs in blankets, shop-bought versions can be surprisingly calorific for such tiny portions. Making your own at home is not only tastier but far more macro-friendly.

Solway suggests using Heck chicken sausages wrapped in bacon medallions to create a generous, protein-packed pig in blanket for roughly 80 calories – bigger, more delicious and much more filling.

A cosy hot chocolate is the ultimate winter comfort, but those creamy café-style versions can pack half a meal’s worth of calories.

Solway loves Options hot chocolate as an alternative, which delivers the same warming, chocolatey hit for around a fifth of the calories, making it perfect for evening treats.

For snacking, crisps and nuts are dangerously easy to overeat, especially when you’re chatting away at festive gatherings.

Popcorn or lightly salted rice cakes give you that satisfying crunch with far fewer calories and much less risk of mindless munching.

And if you can’t resist a mince pie, go for mini versions or those made with filo pastry – you’ll get the same Christmassy flavour for roughly half the calories.

For dessert lovers facing multiple Christmas dinners this month, Solway suggests an alternative to heavy puddings like yule log or cheesecake.

A bowl of thick Greek yoghurt topped with fresh berries, crushed meringue, and a sprinkle of dark chocolate feels like a proper treat – sweet and satisfying but with far fewer calories and a protein boost to keep you full.

In terms of drinks, creamy liqueurs like Baileys can contain hundreds of calories per glass.

Opting for gin with slimline tonic or a glass of Prosecco lets you enjoy the festivities without unknowingly consuming half your daily intake.

Solway noted that these swaps aren’t about restriction, but rather about being intentional throughout the Christmas season.
