Sir Sadiq Khan has been lambasted for his calls for Britain to rejoin the European Union, as Richard Tice branded the remarks “ridiculous”.

In a scathing attack on the London Mayor, Reform UK’s Business, Trade and Energy spokesman questioned why he would want Britain to be “handcuffed to all of that bureaucracy” once again.

The London Mayor has declared the UK’s return to the EU is “inevitable” setting out a five-point plan to see the country rejoin.

Sir Sadiq told Italy’s La Repubblica Magazine: “I’m quite clear. I see on a daily basis the damage Brexit has done – not just to London, but to Londoners.

“Economically, socially and culturally the damage is humongous.”

Expressing his outrage at Sir Sadiq’s comments, Mr Tice told GB News: “We’re certainly not going back to Brussels, it’s just ridiculous.

“Firstly, economically, France and Germany are on the floor. They’re doing as badly or worse than we are. So why would you want to handcuff yourself to all of that bureaucracy and regulations?”

Criticising the EU’s “woke” leadership under Ursula Von Der Leyen, Mr Tice made clear that Britain must remain a “sovereign nation” and not part of the Union.

He said: “If you want a seat at the top table, you need that as an independent, sovereign nation.

“Not at the bottom of a back-end junior table under the woke leadership of Ursula Von Der Leyen.”

Questioned by host Martin Daubney whether the “true heart” of the Labour Party is to travel on the “road to rejoin”, Mr Tice strongly agreed.

He declared: “Yes, there’s no question at all, and I think you get it from Sadiq Khan and various others.”

Interjecting Mr Tice, GB News Political Editor Christopher Hope argued the Labour Government has previously said they will “not be joining the EU customs union” and have denied drawing closer to Europe.

Christopher told the Reform spokesman: “That’s obviously not what the Government is saying. What they are saying, you know jolly well, Richard Tice, they are saying we can’t join their customs union.

“That will involve ripping up the deals with with America, Australia, Canada and India, but they are looking at the single market.”

Criticising the Government further, Mr Tice hit back: “And that’s the issue, is this constant sort of wherever you can, let’s just tie ourselves to this failing economic model.

“Whether it’s the single market, whether it’s the student scheme with Erasmus, all of this is the wrong thing to do.”

Reiterating the UK is stronger as an “independent, sovereign nation”, he concluded: “We should be a proud, sovereign, independent nation.

“Deregulating, cutting wasteful spending, so we can create some growth and then have performance related tax cuts, reducing our bills, reducing the cost of living.

“You’ve got to do that independently.”
