Sir Billy Boston, the trailblazing Wales and Great Britain rugby league legend, has died at the age of 92.
Boston passed away peacefully in hospital in his adopted hometown of Wigan.
His death came only four days after the funeral of Lady Joan, his wife of 70 years.
Boston, who lived with dementia, became the first rugby league player to receive a knighthood when he was honoured by King Charles last year.
Confirming his death, the Welsh Rugby Union paid a deeply emotional tribute to a man whose achievements transcended both codes.
“Sir Billy Boston, one of the best loved and most iconic figures in the history of Welsh sport, has passed away peacefully at the age of 92,” its statement read.
“The most famous son of Tiger Bay, he died overnight in hospital in his adopted home for the past 74 years, Wigan.

Born in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay, Boston initially played rugby union for Neath and Pontypridd during the early 1950s.
After being called up for national service, he switched codes, joining Wigan in 1953.

Boston became a phenomenon during 15 extraordinary years at the Lancashire club, combining pace, strength and devastating finishing ability.
He scored 478 tries in 488 appearances for Wigan, establishing a club record which has never been surpassed.
His contribution was immortalised with a statue in Wigan, while he was also included in the rugby league monument outside Wembley Stadium.
Boston left Wigan in 1968 and completed his playing career with Blackpool Borough before retiring in 1970.
His brilliance also carried onto the international stage. He represented Great Britain 31 times and helped them win the Rugby League World Cup in 1960.
Boston’s achievements carried even greater significance because of the racial prejudice he overcame while becoming one of Britain’s first black sporting superstars.

National recognition finally arrived in 2025 when he became the first rugby league player in the sport’s history to be knighted.
Then-prime minister Sir Keir Starmer described the honour as the correction of a long-standing injustice.
“It is a historic wrong that a sport which is the backbone of so many communities has waited so long to receive this honour,” Starmer said.
“Boston is a legend of the game who overcame prejudice to represent Great Britain and opened the door to a more diverse game.”
Wigan chairman Chris Brookes also celebrated the landmark achievement at the time.
“I am absolutely delighted and so happy that Billy – and rugby league – has finally received the ultimate recognition his stellar career deserves,” he said.
