Prince Harry has revealed plans for a significant Canadian visit during Remembrance week, precisely as his elder brother touched down in Rio de Janeiro for environmental engagements.

The Duke of Sussex’s Toronto itinerary emerged whilst Prince William received an enthusiastic reception atop Sugarloaf Mountain, where he inaugurated Latin America’s inaugural Earthshot Prize ceremony.

The timing has sparked controversy within royal circles. Some fans have expressed disapproval over the scheduling, suggesting it violates an informal convention amongst royals to postpone significant declarations whilst family members undertake official overseas duties.

Harry’s representative confirmed the duke would engage with military personnel and charitable organisations supporting armed forces members throughout his Canadian stay.

His Toronto engagement, described by his spokesman as “months in the planning”, will involve encounters with ex-servicemen, current military personnel and defence-related charities.

The spokesman highlighted Toronto’s significance for the duke, noting the city hosted the 2017 Invictus Games.

The brothers’ simultaneous international commitments underscore their ongoing estrangement, with both pursuing separate charitable endeavours on different continents.

Some fans have condemned the announcement’s timing as a violation of established royal etiquette.

The unspoken agreement amongst family members typically prevents major declarations whilst other royals conduct international visits.

Critics within royal circles view the scheduling as particularly inappropriate given William’s high-profile environmental mission in Brazil.

Social media responses revealed divided opinions about the announcement.

One X user wrote: “That to coincide with William’s earthshot trip to Brazil .. I think so what’s new?”

Another commenter stated: “Canada doesnt want him here….so he can leave our veterans alone because him and his wife do this for publicity that is all.”

A third person posted: “Irrelevant, all eyes are on William in Brazil.”

One user observed: “It’s always impressive how seamlessly these ‘just announced’ updates land – right as Prince William steps out in Rio.”

Despite criticism, some supporters welcomed Harry’s plans, with one writing: “I’m sure he will be a big hit in Toronto.”

William’s Brazilian programme encompasses three days of activities in Rio, culminating in Wednesday evening’s awards gala.

Thursday sees the prince travelling to Belem, known as the Amazon’s entrance point, where he’ll join Sir Keir Starmer at the COP30 climate summit.
