PSV vs Arsenal – Champions League: Live score, team news and updates as Yorbe Vertessen equalises after Eddie Nketiah’s great first-half finish in entertaining match with Dutch league leaders causing Gunners lots of trouble
Follow Mail Sport’s live blog for the latest score, team news and updates from the Phillips Stadium as Arsenal take on PSV in Champions League action.
PSV sub
Guus Til is on for Malik Tillman.
Arsenal goal ruled out!
Some Arsenal bodies were definitely offside from a free-kick and the call has been upheld after a VAR check.
Jakub Kiwior turned the ball in, but Gabriel was right next to him and was adjudged to have been offside and intefering with play after Martin Odegaard’s delicious cross.
Last ten minutes… can anyone find a winner?
Floods of praise for Johan Bakayoko
I promise I’m not being paid by his camp to promote him…
He was subbed a few minutes ago, but Johan Bakayoko is still dominating the chatter on X.
The little dink over Jakub Kiwior was mesmeric and one suspects it won’t be too long before we see this Bakayoko chap in the Premier League.
PSV subs
Sergino Dest on for Ismail Saibari.
Isaac Babadi on for Johan Bakayoko
Johan Bakayoko wins free-kick after spectacular dribble
After chipping the ball over Jakub Kiwior on the right flank, he darts towards goal, jinks in onto his left, but is brought down on the edge of the box parallel with the sideline.
The free-kick comes to nothing, but what a player he is.
Reiss Nelson hits side netting!
More heartbreak for Arsenal supporters as they celebrate a second ghost goal of the half!
Reiss Nelson dazzled with tricky feet as he tried to bewilder the PSV defence, before slicing a shot into the side netting.
Eddie Nketiah down injured
Eddie Nketiah looks to be having some trouble with his eye after a collision. He struggles to his feet but stumbles off blinking. I imagine he’ll be off soon.
Arsenal subs: Martin Odegaard on for Mohamed Elneny plus two more
A suspected hamstring injury has brought Mohamed Elneny’s night to an end.
Declan Rice is on for Cedric while Ben White comes on for William Saliba.
Are they switching to a back three?
Mohamed Elneny down receiving treatment
It looks like cramp for the Arsenal midfielder.
Eddie Nketiah bumbles ball into side netting
Eddie Nketiah did well to beat his marker at the back post following a cross from the right, but his head bounced off his shoulder before wobbling into the side netting.
Cheers from Arsenal fans who thought it had gone in.
Any changes since the goal?
Arsenal look to have woken up a bit. They’ve seen a lot more of the ball since the equaliser, but haven’t carved out any major chances.
PSV are still showing lots of attacking intent and Patrick van Aanholt saw a long shot deflected. I think he saw the headlines in his head easier than the goal from that distance.
WATCH: Yorbe Vertessen’s equaliser
GOAL! YORBE VERTESSEN! PSV 1-1 ARSENAL!
Great take from Yorbe Vertessen!
Ricardo Pepi set him up in the box and Vertessen opened up his body to stroke the ball into the far corner, away in some distant land to Aaron Ramsdale’s left.
Gabriel snuffs out threat
Arsenal’s two centre-backs, Gabriel and William Saliba, have been imperious.
A through ball down the right releases Johan Bakayoko – of course it’s him – but Saliba cleans up.
PSV go close
Again, it’s a rapid surge forward that causes Arsenal trouble.
Ricardo Pepi, Johan Bakayoko, and Yorbe Vertessen combine but the latter drags his shot wide from outside the box.
Second half underway
PSV get us going for the second half. No substitutions.
Stat attack
Shout out to Squawka for this whopper of a statistic – Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson are the first English pair to combine for an Arsenal Champions League goal since 2014.
It’s easy to forget how long the Gunners have been starved of this competition. The last time they were at Europe’s top table before this season was in 2016/17.
Elsewhere in the group…
Lens and Sevilla are currently drawing 0-0 in France, meaning the hosts would drop into the Europa League and deny the Spaniards another run at their favourite competition!
Coming third in this group would be a real achievement for Lens.
WATCH: A proper look at Eddie Nketiah’s goal
I’ll let the football do the talking.
Half-time: PSV 0-1 Arsenal
Johan Bakayoko forces save!
Aaron Ramsdale had to dive low and with urgency there as Johan Bakayoko almost bags an equaliser! A sneaky shot which nearly wormed its way into the bottom corner.
It came a minute after a Mohamed Elneny ‘handball’ shout was waved away after a VAR check.
Take a bow, Eddie Nketiah!
Arsenal’s frontman was the coolest man in the Netherlands as he sealed his first Champions League goal. Great strike.
GOAL! EDDIE NKETIAH! PSV 0-1 ARSENAL!
Maybe he’s reading the comments on X!
That was a great goal by Eddie Nketiah. One touch to set himself on the edge of the box under pressure from Ramalho, then the shot with his left into the bottom corner to the goalkeeper’s left. Sweet strike.
Reisse Nelson with the assist.
Nketiah header flops
Eddie Nketiah stuck his noggin on the end of a whipped cross from the left but couldn’t connect properly. It travels all of, what, two yards before being scooped away?
Arsenal growing into the game
Arsenal are dominating the ball, with 55% of possession, but a shots comparison of two to PSV’s eight needs amending.
Jorginho in midfield has been a particular delight – astute in his positioning and confident on the ball. You’d say Arsenal are winning the midfield battle but PSV are having joy on the counter in wide areas.
It’s a Johan Bakayoko world and we’re all just living in it
Best man on the pitch so far? PSV’s right winger.
Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard are having to double up on the wide man, who is a target for Liverpool and Brentford. Only 20 years old but he looks like adding to his tally of goals and assist this season.
Four goals and 13 assists for him this season. Sensational, and a problem for Mikel Arteta to fix.
William Saliba blocks!
Ricardo Pepi had the ball on the edge of the area and tried to curl a shot into Aaron Ramsdale’s right corner, but William Saliba stood up well and put his body on the line. Out for a corner.
Mauro Junior strike sails over
Good luck hitting row Z with that one, Mauro Junior – it looks like we’ll need to be adding letters to the alphabet after his shot ballooned well over.
Mohamed Elneny clips post!
Mohamed Elneny burst through the midfield and bulleted a shot towards goal, sending goalkeeper Walter Benitez scampering for the ball, but it clips the post to the goalie’s right and skims wide.
Fans’ voice
Almost half an hour played at the Philips Stadion and fans are having their say on the night so far.
Is dissatisfaction the right word? Supporters are wanting to see a bit of magic and feel Eddie Nketiah has more to give – though the ‘useless’ accusation is a rogue shout! PSV have had most of the chances.
Yorbe Vertessen chance reviewed
It was a whipped cross from the right that surged onto Yorbe Vertessen’s head in the Arsenal area, and you wonder if the Gunners could have defender better.
It all happened very fast, but it was too easy for the winger and his header bashed off the post. Where was the proper challenge?
Johan Bakayoko goes close!
A thunderous strike from Johan Bakayoko.
He cut in from the right and unleashed fire with his left foot, blasting it just wide of the post as Aaron Ramsdale dove at full tilt for the high shot. Arsenal survive another scare.
PSV hit post!
Yorbe Vertessen clattered a header against the post there moments after another chance for PSV. They’ve having lots of joy down the right.
Arsenal free-kick comes to nothing
Kai Havertz met a free-kick from deep but miscued his header and it rolled wide.
A closer look at Van Aanholt’s chance
PSV have had the best chance of the game so far, when Johan Bakayoko threaded through a delicious ball from the right for Patrick van Aanholt to run on to.
Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel were quick to respond, but I can see how you’d come out of that impact with a few bruises!
Aaron Ramsdale down.. but carrying on?
Aaron Ramsdale is receiving treatment for an injury, perhaps due to his earlier collision with Patrick van Aanholt.
He gets up and looks uncomfortable as he has his hands on his knees, but he is carrying on.
Could Arsenal have tried out more youngsters?
Some Arsenal fans are suggesting that Mikel Arteta could have had more faith in academy players tonight.
Ethan Nwaneri, Lino Sousa, and Reuell Walters are on the bench and will be hoping to come on. Do any of them deserve a start?
Arsenal vulnerable on the counter?
Leandro Trossard tries his hand at a corner from the right but it doesn’t get past the first man and PSV counter. They’ve got blistering speed.
Big stop from Gabriel!
PSV counter-attack rapidly and the ball fell at the feet of Patrick van Aanholt, but Aaron Ramsdale was quick off his line to meet the threat and Gabriel produced a crucial last-ditch challenge metres from goal. Ricardo Pepi can’t score the rebound.
From the ensuing corner, PSV head over.
Cedric’s solid start
Cedric has made a decent beginning at right-back in his first start in this competition since 2014.
PSV shoved a few men up the left flank but Cedric was powerful enough to battle Mauro Junior off the ball.
A low-key start to this contest so far. No chances.
Theme tune time!
The players are out on the pitch and the theme tune is blaring!
Remember, both of these teams are already through, but the Philips Stadion is sold out and the atmosphere is bouncing.
Kick-off pending…
Time to get your predictions in, folks!
A perfect PSV record!
PSV have won all 15 of their Eredivisie matches this season – some going.
When Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2018/19, even they lost four league games in the Netherlands, so that proves how well PSV are doing!
Who has the biggest point to prove tonight?
Lots of second-stringers are being given a shot tonight by Mikel Arteta as he rests key players.
It’s a big night for the likes of Jakub Kiwior and Reiss Nelson as they have 90 minutes under the lights at best to prove themselves, with plenty of hungry starlets on the bench ready to take their spot. They need to make the most of this night to endear themselves to Arteta.
Ramsdale hits the turf
Aaron Ramsdale is preparing for his fourth start since September 27. A big night for him as he tries to work his way back into Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Arsenal’s youngest-eevr player named on the bench
Ethan Nwaneri has been named on the bench for tonight’s encounter.
Mikel Arteta heaped praise on the ‘unique’ youngster earlier this week.
Last season, aged 15, he played against Brentford to become the youngest Arsenal player ever and the youngest in Premier League history?
Could he make his European bow tonight?
PSV’s line-up for tonight
The great Ramsdale vs Raya debate contineus…
As Rio Ferdinand once famously said about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo: ‘Just enjoy them!’
Aaron Ramsdale has reclaimed his place between the sticks for the Gunners just days after he was caught laughing – with fans speculating it was over David Raya’s howler against Luton.
Mikel Arteta has insisted that the two can co-exist healthily. Neither has made the goalkeeper gloves their own this campaign.
Is this Ramsdale’s night?
Arsenal’s teamsheet is out: Aaron Ramsdale makes Champions League debut
Mikel Arteta makes eight changes to the side that lost 1-0 to Aston Villa. It looks like he’s choosing not to risk some of his key players.
Aaron Ramsdale is in for his Champions League debut.
Jorginho comes in as captain.
Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares make their first appearances of the season.
William Saliba, Gabriel, and Kai Havertz are the only survivors from the loss to Unai Emery’s side.
A reminder of September’s 4-0 rout
How was this night, Gunners fans? Arsenal flaunted all their feathers and attacking prowess in September with a stunning performance.
Welcome to Eindhoven!
PSV’s Philips Stadion is tonight’s venue, where the hosts have won all of their last five competitive fixtures – including a 5-2 win over Ajax.
Arsenal’s merry band of travellers got a feel for the turf yesterday.
One thing we should expect tonight?
Good afternoon
Hello and welcome to Mail Sport’s live blog of Arsenal’s trip to PSV in the Champions League.
Mikel Arteta’s charges have already sealed their place at the top of the group but tonight still presents a fascinating encounter.
PSV’s only loss in all competitions this season was the 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in September, so they present strong opposition.
