Anti-Donald Trump activists have shut down Forth Road Bridge ahead of the US President’s visit to Scotland tonight.
The bridge, located just outside Edinburgh in South Queensferry, was closed shortly after protesters were seen abseiling down at around 1.05pm.
Photos from the scene showed around a dozen activists abseiling down from the bridge.
Climate campaign group Greenpeace confirmed its activists abseiled down the 156 metre bridge to block an Ineos tanker.
Activists were also seen clutching six red banners which carried the slogan: “Plastics Treaty Now.”
Police Scotland urged the public to stay away from the area as officers continue to deal with the incident.
The force said: “The Forth Road Bridge is closed due to a protest reported to police around 1.05pm on Friday, 25 July.
“Officers are in attendance and engaging with those involved. Please avoid the area.”
Traffic Scotland added: “Users of the Forth Road Bridge are advised to use the Queensferry Crossing at this time due to a police incident.”
Greenpeace confirmed its protest was intended to block an Ineos tanker from delivering fracked gas cargo bound for the Sir Jim Ratcliffe-owned Grangemouth petrochemical facility.
Amy Cameron, programme director at Greenpeace UK, said: “Ratcliffe tries to distract us with sports teams and sponsorships, but we’re not going to let him fill our planet with plastic, so he can fill his pockets with profit.”
