Prince William has paid an emotional tribute to Welsh rugby legend Leigh Halfpenny following the full-back’s announcement that he will retire from professional rugby at the end of the season.

The Prince of Wales, who serves as patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, shared a personal message praising Mr Halfpenny’s extraordinary contribution to the sport after a career spanning nearly two decades.

In a statement, William said: “Congratulations to Leigh Halfpenny on an outstanding career representing Wales and the British & Irish Lions.

“A player who embodied courage, professionalism and humility throughout every chapter of the game.

“Your dedication to Welsh rugby has inspired so many, and your achievements will long be remembered.

“Wishing you all the best for the future. W”.

GB News understands the message was posted at the time chosen to accommodate school runs for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Mr Halfpenny, 37, confirmed earlier this week that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign, bringing to a close one of the most decorated careers in modern Welsh rugby.

The full-back earned 101 caps for Wales, scoring 801 points, and became one of the most reliable goal-kickers of his generation.

He also represented the British & Irish Lions on three tours, famously being named player of the series during the Lions’ victorious 2013 tour of Australia.

Across his club career, Mr Halfpenny featured for Cardiff Rugby, Scarlets, RC Toulon and Harlequins.

He built a reputation not only for his precision kicking but for his resilience and professionalism.

William’s tribute reflects Mr Halfpenny’s deep connection to Welsh sport and his enduring legacy both on and off the pitch.

Supporters across the rugby world are also sharing messages of admiration following the retirement news.

Online fan tributes have praised his consistency, defensive bravery and elite kicking ability.

Prince William has been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016, after previously serving as vice-patron.

He regularly attends men’s and women’s internationals, especially Six Nations Championship fixtures, and is often seen meeting players in changing rooms or post-match.

The Prince of Wales has spoken publicly about supporting Wales in rugby, even though he supports England in football, because he grew up an Aston Villa FC fan.

The father-of-three has also posted personal tributes to Welsh rugby figures like JPR Williams.

When he signs messages with “W”, it’s a sign that it’s written in his personal voice rather than just a Palace communications post.
