Prince William has urged the world to embrace “urgent optimism” in confronting the climate emergency, penning a piece in The Independent as preparations advance for the sixth Earthshot Prize ceremony, set to take place in Mumbai, India this November.

The Prince of Wales’s intervention comes after Britain endured its most punishing summer since meteorological records commenced in 1884, with Met Office provisional data revealing an average temperature of 16.5C across the season.

The heir to the throne described the widespread wildfires that swept the country as “devastating” and “alarming”, calling them a “powerful reminder of the risks associated with a warming climate”.

The UK Health Security Agency estimated that the blazes, triggered by successive heatwaves, were responsible for approximately 2,877 deaths in England.

In his article, the prince argued that the sheer magnitude of the challenge risked paralysing people into inaction.

“The crisis demands urgency. But without a belief that change is possible, its scale can leave us feeling overwhelmed,” he wrote. “Optimism gives us confidence that our actions can make a difference. We need both.”

William defined his central philosophy as “seeing the danger clearly while believing in our ability to respond.”

Crucially, he contended that humanity’s principal task is no longer one of invention.

“For the first time in history, our greatest challenge is not inventing the answers,” he wrote. “It is deploying and scaling the solutions we already know work. It is not naivety or blind hope. It is optimism grounded in evidence.”

The prince pointed to tangible results delivered by former Earthshot finalists, who he said “have already helped avoid or capture 18 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions, protected and restored over 85 million hectares of ocean and coastline and improved air quality in regions home to 600 million people”.

He insisted that efforts to mitigate wildfire risk and limit their destruction were already under way, alongside broader environmental initiatives.

“We can, and must, make the remainder of this decade count,” he wrote.

The Mumbai gathering will mark the latest stop in a global tour for William’s decade-long initiative, which has previously been hosted in London, Singapore, Cape Town, Boston and Rio de Janeiro.

Prizes are awarded across five categories: Protect and restore nature, Clean our air, Revive our oceans, Build a waste-free world, and Fix our climate.
