Mayor Eduardo Paes welcomed Prince William to Rio de Janeiro today, presenting him with ceremonial keys to the city atop Sugarloaf Mountain.

The royal ascended the iconic landmark via cable car, where Mayor Paes guided him to panoramic viewing points overlooking the Brazilian metropolis.

The symbolic gesture took place at the mountain’s summit, offering the prince sweeping vistas of Rio’s landscape during his official visit to Brazil.

The visit commemorates two centuries of diplomatic relations between Britain and Brazil, encompassing collaboration on environmental protection, sustainable growth and cultural initiatives.

During their summit meeting, the prince and Mayor Paes explored Brazil’s role in hosting the Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.

Their discussions centred on Brazilian efforts to combat environmental challenges, recognising the nation’s significant contributions to addressing the climate emergency through various initiatives.

Members of the public had an opportunity to meet Prince William before his descent from the mountain.

The royal interaction occurred prior to his cable car journey back down Sugarloaf Mountain.

During their summit meeting, the prince and Mayor Paes explored Brazil’s role in hosting the Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.

The engagement with Brazilian citizens concluded the symbolic visit, which reinforced the enduring partnership between the two nations whilst highlighting shared commitments to environmental preservation and sustainable development over their 200-year relationship.

It comes as Prince William and King Charles joined forces to create one of the Prince of Wales’s defining statements ahead of his trip to Brazil.

The Prince of Wales will address global leaders at COP30 and attend the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.
