Prince Harry joked that life in the Royal Family is like Downton Abbey as he spoke at a business lunch in Los Angeles.

The Duke of Sussex made a series of jokes while he served as a surprise guest at the British American Business Council’s lunch.

The 41-year-old was at the event in LA to celebrate the “deeply personal” relationship between the UK and the USA.

During the lunch, he took an opportunity to compare royal family life to that of Lord Julian Fellows’ Downton Abbey.

The duke joked: “People sometimes ask if growing up with the Royal Family was a bit like Julian’s Downton Abbey.

“Yeah, but only one of those worlds is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners, marriages to Americans, and the other is a TV show.”

The royal was in the spotlight this week for taking aim at Donald Trump during a comedic appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The Duke of Sussex appeared in a sketch where he played himself searching for a role in a fictional Hallmark festive film.

During the segment, Harry acted as if he was lost while walking around the television studio, saying he was looking for auditions for “Gingerbread Christmas Prince saves Christmas in Nebraska”.

When Mr Colbert asked why genuine royalty would pursue such roles, the duke replied: “You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?”

The host challenged Harry’s suggestion that Americans were obsessed with royalty, prompting the Duke to quip: “Really? I hear you elected a king” – in what appeared to be a nod to the No Kings protests against the Trump administration.

The duke also made a jest about CBS’s recent legal settlement with the President, joking that he would “do anything” to get the part, including settling “a baseless lawsuit with the White House – all the things you people in TV do”.

When Mr Colbert argued that he personally had not been involved in such activities, Harry retorted: “Maybe that’s why you’re cancelled.”

The audience cheered as Mr Colbert awarded Harry the title of “official Late Show Prince of Christmas”.

Earlier on Wednesday, the pair teased the duke’s appearance with a promotional video that recreated a viral moment from Great British Bake Off.

In the clip, Harry mimicked presenter Alison Hammond’s voice while sitting in the guest chair, asking Mr Colbert: “If you were treated like a king for a day, what would you want me to do for you?”

Mr Colbert replied in the style of Northern Irish baker Mark Lutton: “Bake for me probably?”

The exchange recreated the well-known misunderstanding where Hammond thought Lutton had said “beg” rather than “bake”.

The Duchess of Sussex shared the preview clip on her Instagram story before the broadcast.

Wednesday’s broadcast was the duke’s second appearance on The Late Show, after his January 2023 visit to promote his memoir Spare.
