The Prince and Princess of Wales made their inaugural trip to Scotland’s Isle of Bute on Thursday, stepping off the ferry to meet dozens of local residents and honour the island’s strong tradition of community volunteering.
Known north of the border as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, the couple’s visit continues their deepening connection with Scottish island communities, having travelled to Iona and Mull in the Inner Hebrides last year.
Catherine struck a stylish autumnal note for the occasion, pairing a brown Burberry trench coat with a green turtleneck jumper and dark jeans.
The couple posed for selfies with enthusiastic islanders throughout the day.
At the Bute Shinty Club, which doubles as a vital social gathering place for residents, William and Catherine met both current and former players before settling in to watch an under-17s match alongside locals.
The princess was clearly keen, picking up the curved stick – known as a caman – and the small leather ball before announcing: “I want to give it a go.”
The pair then tried their hand at penalties. William’s opening effort barely travelled a few inches, though he soon found his range to cheers from onlookers.

William spoke approvingly of the pub’s operating model, which harnesses local goodwill to keep the venture viable. The Princess of Wales called it something “special.”
The visit reflected the broader theme of the day – a celebration of grassroots endeavour and the quiet dedication of ordinary people sustaining their communities.
Yet the day’s positive imagery was inevitably shadowed by fresh allegations against the King, contained in Earl Spencer’s memoir tribute to his late sister Diana.
Serialised by the Daily Mail, the book claims that when then-Prince Charles telephoned the Earl after the princess’s death, he sounded “giddily elated like a lottery winner.”
Earl Spencer also wrote that Diana had driven “more than once” to the cliffs at Beachy Head while “contemplating ending it all,” though “her love for her sons stopped her from going further.”
The Palace had not formally responded to the claims by Thursday evening, though a spokesman said on Wednesday that “fraternal grief can cloud reason.”
