Emergency services attended, however, the 58-year-old driver of the Hyundai i30 was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police helicopter and dog unit have been used to hunt for the who left the scene.

Four others were taken to hospital for treatment following the crash but they were later released.

Insp Thomas Mallinson said: “My thoughts are with the family of the person who died at this incredibly difficult time.

“Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash, and it is vital we trace the three people who left the area before police arrived.”

He asked anyone with information to contact Police Scotland, external.

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) dispatched three ambulances, two special operations response teams, a paramedic response unit and a critical care paramedic.

The road was closed for a number of hours to allow an investigation to take place but reopened at 19:05.
