Piers Morgan has launched a blistering attack on Earl Spencer’s “disgusting lies” after publishing false claims about him in a new book about his late sister, Princess Diana.
Speaking to GB News after announcing legal action against the late Earl Spencer, Mr Morgan declared the controversial memoir must be “pulped” and withdrawn from shop shelves.
Following the claims made in his new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Earl Spencer issued a formal apology to Piers Morgan after conceding he made a mistake about the broadcaster and former newspaper editor.
Earl Spencer wrongly claimed that Mr Morgan was editing the Daily Mirror when intrusive photographs taken of Diana exercising in a leotard at a gym were published in 1993.
However, Mr Morgan did not take the helm at the Daily Mirror until October 1995, meaning he had no editorial responsibility for the images which appeared.
In a statement, a spokesman for Earl Spencer confirmed the apology: “As an historian, accuracy is important to Earl Spencer.
“He therefore wishes to clarify that his assumption was incorrect. Earl Spencer apologises to Mr Morgan for this error.”
Speaking to GB News following his legal pursuit, Mr Morgan told host Michelle Dewberry that the claims are “historically, disastrously wrong”.
He said: “Earl Spencer claims to be an historian and yet here he is historically disastrously wrong by publishing a seriously defamatory lie about me. And that lie remains in his book.

“Now, today, he’s apologised to me personally, which is pretty unprecedented and said that he got it wrong. And as an historian, he says it’s my duty to get it right.
“Okay, well, then pulp the book, take it off the shelves. Because at the moment, millions of copies of that book are around the world going on sale, being bought by people, containing a defamatory lie about me.”
Recalling his own recollection of the phone call shared with Earl Spencer in his own memoir, Mr Morgan made clear that the claims in the new book are “disgusting lies”.
He argued: “The reason I know how that call went and it wasn’t the way he’s retelling it is because I wrote a best selling volume of diaries in 2005 called The Insider.

BBC“And in The Insider, there is a diary entry about that phone call. People can go and read it for themselves, they will see the tone that I used. They will see how respectful I was to him and to his family.
“So for him to now try and rewrite history, as an historian, supposedly to make out that I was the bad guy here, and I was being rude and surly and obnoxious to him when a guy just lost his sister rings me to have a conversation is a disgusting lie.”
Vowing to continue his legal action against Earl Spencer, Mr Morgan told GB News that he will take the process “as far as it needs to go” as his apology is “not enough”.
He said: “I’m afraid the historian has been found wanting. He’s apologised, but that’s not enough.
“I’ve written to the law firm Schillings, to him and Penguin the publishers, tonight, demanding they withdraw sale of the book, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable.

“We sent it this evening, and we will see what they say. Every penny of any damages that I get from this, and there will be damages, will go to the King’s Trust, which is King Charles’s personal charity.
“And so the longer that they leave this book on sale, the more copies that get sold, the greater exponentially the damage caused by the defamation.”
Mr Morgan concluded that Earl Spencer has “admitted he is wrong”, and is speaking “with a false tongue” about many claims made in the book about himself and the Royal Family.
He said: “He’s admitted it’s wrong. It’s a defamatory lie. Any lawyer can confirm that it’s still in the book. He can resolve this right away, just withdraw the book from sale.
“He’s doing exactly what he said he wouldn’t do. He actually said on camera ‘what kind of brother or sister would ever cash in on their siblings death’, and here he is cashing in on Diana’s death, doing exactly what he’s always accused of media of doing, just like Prince Harry. Just a reprehensible hypocrite.”
