The PGA Tour plans to have no events in Hawaii for the first time in 63 years after this year’s season opener in Maui was cancelled because of drought conditions.

The Sentry was scheduled for 8-11 January at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, but had to be scrapped as the course failed to resolve a water rights dispute with another local company.

An alternative venue could not be found so the season made a less ceremonious start on 15 January with the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

That event on Oahu has traditionally been paired with The Sentry, allowing golfers a two-week stay in the Pacific, but the PGA Tour is considering moving it to the Champions Tour alongside the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.

Sentry Insurance’s event sponsorship deal runs to 2035 and PGA executives have reportedly visited Torrey Pines in San Diego with a view to transferring the title sponsorship as that event’s partnership with Farmers Insurance is expected to end this year.

The Sentry was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions and served as the PGA Tour’s season opener from 1986-2013 and 2024-25.

It typically boasted the top 50 players from the final FedEx Cup standings and all winners from the previous season.

The PGA Tour has hosted at least one event in Hawaii each year since the Sony Open began in 1965.

It said more details about the 2027 schedule will be shared at a later date.
