Petrol drivers are facing a dire experience at the fuel pumps today as new data shows that unleaded has finally hit an average of 150p per litre.

The latest analysis from RAC Fuel Watch shows that petrol has finally risen to 150.11p, a massive increase of 17.3p in less than four weeks since the outbreak of war in the Middle East.

On February 28, drivers were paying just 132.83p per litre for unleaded petrol, with prices rising 13 per cent since the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Diesel drivers are also battling against soaring costs, with the RAC showing that motorists are forking out 177.68p on average for fuel.

Diesel car owners have seen a more pronounced increase in costs compared to others, with a 35.3p hike – almost 25 per cent higher than at the end of February.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, described the recent price milestone as “unwelcome”, noting that it was the highest price since May 2024.

He warned that prices would likely rise over the coming days, with diesel expected to hit a grim benchmark of 180p within days.

Mr Williams continued, saying: “With the long-awaited four-day Easter weekend almost within touching distance, the cost of getting away by car is going to be noticeably higher this year.

“And with average prices at motorway services at 166p for unleaded and 182p for diesel, drivers on long journeys will need to plan very carefully where they refuel.”

Drivers across the UK are now paying more than 150p per litre for petrol on average

While fuel costs are still a long way from record prices seen in the summer of 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the months after war broke out in Eastern Europe, drivers in the UK were routinely paying £1.90 for petrol and a staggering £2, although some motorway service stations were charging as much as £2.30.

GB News has compiled the most expensive petrol and diesel prices across the UK, according to the latest data from the Government’s Fuel Finder tool.
