Drivers are being warned of soaring petrol and diesel prices, despite the Prime Minister acknowledging that the Government was taking steps to help drivers with fuel costs.

The latest data from the RAC Fuel Watch shows that petrol and diesel prices in the UK have hit the highest levels in over 18 months, much to the dismay of hard-pressed motorists.

Drivers are routinely paying more than 141p per litre for their fuel, while diesel has skyrocketed to more than £1.60 a litre, as the RAC predicts that prices will continue to rise.

Speaking today at an emergency press conference, Sir Keir Starmer outlined the measures of support the Government had introduced to help motorists at the pump.

He said: “We have extended the cut in fuel duty until September. And we’ve introduced the cheap Fuel Finder, forcing petrol stations to publish their live prices to make it easier for drivers to choose the lowest price.

“Let me be really clear on this: Back in 2022, when prices spiked because of the conflict in Ukraine, I campaigned for a windfall tax on oil and gas companies.

“And we have raised it in Government to ensure that companies can’t profit from spikes in prices like these.”

He emphasised that these measures would help money get back into the pockets of people, noting that the Government was elected to stop profiteering and exploitative business practices.

Sir Keir Starmer said forecourt owners would not be able to unfairly profit from the recent oil crisis in an announcement this morning

Labour previously outlined plans to begin a reversal of the 5p per litre fuel duty cut in September, when 1p will be cut, followed by another 2p fall in December, before the final 2p is wiped next March.

These measures have been announced to ensure that drivers are not hit with a huge cost hike if the 5p were to be reserved in one move. Despite this, the Government is expected to hike the rate of fuel duty in line with inflation from March 2027.

Experts hope the Fuel Finder scheme will boost competition among retailers, with initial estimates suggesting drivers could save between 1p and 6p per litre once the scheme is in place.

GB News has rounded up the most expensive petrol and diesel prices in recent days with data from the Fuel Finder tool.

Oil prices have broken past the $103 (£77) mark in recent hours, with experts warning of further fuel price hikes
