Alex Burghart has demanded Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer steps down, accusing him of deceiving Parliament over the security vetting of Lord Peter Mandelson and his connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

Speaking on the Camilla Tominey Show on GB News, the Conservative MP stated: “He’s clearly misled Parliament.”

The shadow minister argued that Sir Keir’s conduct represents far more than a minor transgression, describing it as “not so much the straw that breaks the camel’s back as the anvil that breaks the camel’s back”.

Mr Burghart declared: “I think we’ve all had enough of him. It’s time for him to go.”

The Conservative MP outlined a two-pronged case against the Prime Minister.

In February, Kemi Badenoch questioned Sir Keir at the dispatch box about whether Lord Mandelson’s security vetting had raised any issues regarding his Epstein connections.

Mr Burghart explained: “The Prime Minister said yes, and that strongly suggests that he had seen the security vetting, which he now claims he hasn’t seen.

“So even if he didn’t know anything about it, which I think is very unlikely, but even if he didn’t know anything about it, Downing Street have admitted that on Tuesday night he was told, and under the rules of the House of Commons he has a very solemn duty to come to the House whenever anything is serious this happens and admit that he’s made a mistake.”

Mr Burghart argued that Sir Keir failed to fulfil this duty: “On Wednesday, he didn’t do that. On Thursday, he didn’t do that. And the story only came out on Thursday night because investigative journalists brought it out.”

The Conservative MP was unequivocal in his assessment of the consequences.

Mr Burghart said: “So by any stretch, he has misled the House. He didn’t correct the rules. He has broken the rules of the House. He’s in very serious trouble.”

The Tory claimed that significant discontent exists within Labour’s own ranks. “It’s very clear that there’s a large number of Labour MPs who are furious with the Prime Minister.

“They feel very badly let down, and I don’t think that they want his premiership to continue,” he said.

The Conservative MP suggested the question surrounding Sir Keir future has shifted from possibility to inevitability.

“I think it’s becoming a question of when and not if,” he added.

Mr Burghart indicated his party stands prepared to collaborate with unhappy Labour backbenchers, though he acknowledged that with Labour’s substantial majority, any change depends on whether their MPs act collectively.

“Keir Starmer has run out of road. He doesn’t deserve to be Prime Minister anymore,” Mr Burghart concluded.

Defending the Prime Minister on GB News, Labour MP Tom Hayes said this morning that Sir Keir was not told due to the “bonkers” vetting system and will address MPs on Monday.

He said: “If you, as Prime Minister are not told about the failure in security vetting or the override and then you do find out, what are you going to do? You’re going to wonder what the hell is going on.

“He instructed his cabinet secretary to assemble the facts, and once those facts were assembled, on Monday he is then coming to the House of Commons, and I hope to see you cover it.”
