An 86-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murders of Harry and Megan Tooze.

The couple were found dead with gunshot wounds at their farmhouse in Llanharry, near Bridgend in south Wales, in 1993.

It follows a two-and-a-half forensic review of the case by South Wales Police.

No further details have been released about the suspect, who was arrested early on the morning of Wednesday, 17 December.

South Wales Police have been investigating the case for years

The individual is now being questioned by detectives.

The murder of the married couple on July 26, 1993, is one of the most infamous cases in Welsh criminal history.

It previously ended in a miscarriage of justice as authorities charged the wrong person.

Harry died aged 64 while Megan was 67.

South Wales Police said modern forensic techniques might breathe new life into the case when they decided to open it up again in 2023.

The retired couple were killed at their remote farmhouse, sparking a huge police investigation.

It lasted four months with the boyfriend of the couple’s only daughter being charged with the double killing.

Jonathan Jones, now 65, was jailed for life after a trial at Newport Crown Court in 1995, only for him to be freed a year later when the Court of Appeal ruled his conviction was unsafe.

Cheryl Tooze always stood by her boyfriend and called for his release while offering a £25,000 reward for information about the murders.

After his release, the couple had a son together after marrying.

Mr Jones has long fought to clear his name in the years following.

The couple have made repeated calls for the case to be reopened and several reviews by South Wales Police have failed to yield the desired breakthrough.

Operation Vega, led by Supt Mark Lewis, was launched to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the murder.

Following today’s development, he said: While this arrest is clearly a significant development in the investigation, our enquiries are very much ongoing.

“This case has affected many people over the years and our aim is to find the answers to the unanswered questions which remain about their deaths over 30 years on. Even with this passage of time I appeal to anyone who has any information about the murders to come forward and speak to police.”
