Applications for Pension Credit have dropped by more than a third over the past twelve months, according to new figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Between February 24, 2025 and February 22, 2026, the DWP recorded a 36 per cent decline in claims compared with the preceding year, but are you eligible for the DWP benefit?
The department processed 242,440 applications during this period whilst receiving just 209,735 new submissions, successfully reducing the substantial backlog that built up when pensioners flooded the system ahead of winter fuel payment changes.
Award rates have also improved markedly, with 61 per cent of applications now being approved versus 53 per cent in the previous year.

Rachel Vahey, the head of public policy at AJ Bell, said the turmoil triggered by the Winter Fuel Payment withdrawal announcement in July 2024 remains clearly visible in the pension credit data.
She said: “But it now looks like normal service has resumed, with claims falling back to pre-July 2024 levels.”
The improved approval rate suggests applicants are now more confident about their eligibility before submitting claims, Ms Vahey noted, contrasting with the wave of speculative applications that flooded in 18 months ago.
The pensions expert added: “A bigger proportion of claims are also now being awarded, indicating that more pensioners who think they have a sure-fire case are submitting claims, unlike the surge of ‘last chance’ claims seen in autumn 2024.”

GETTYDespite the improved processing rates, close to 100,000 applications were unsuccessful during the twelve-month period, with 11,710 claims still awaiting decisions at the end of the week beginning February 16, 2026.
Ms Vahey observed that many applicants appear unaware they do not meet the qualifying criteria, even following government campaigns to boost understanding of pension credit following the Winter Fuel Payment controversy.
She said: “Almost 100,000 claims were still not awarded in the year to February 22, 2026, meaning a large number of those submitting claims may be unaware they don’t qualify.”
Government ministers reversed course in June 2025, reinstating Winter Fuel Payments for most pensioners earning below £35,000 annually.

Pension Credit provides a vital income supplement for those above state pension age living on limited means.
Single individuals with weekly income below £227.10, equivalent to roughly £11,800 annually, qualify for the benefit, while couples must earn less than £346.60 per week, or approximately £18,000 per year.
These thresholds are due to rise from April. The benefit effectively tops up income to meet these minimum levels, with calculations taking into account state pension, private pensions, earnings and most social security payments.
Historically, many eligible pensioners have failed to claim, often unaware of their entitlement. Applications must be submitted actively through the DWP, either online or by telephone.
