King Charles and Queen Camilla will undertake a State Visit to the Holy See in late October 2025.

The King and Queen will join Pope Leo XIV in celebrating the 2025 Jubilee Year.

Traditionally marked every 25 years, a Papal Jubilee is a special time for the Catholic Church.

The visit will also celebrate the ecumenical work by the Church of England and the Catholic Church, reflecting the Jubilee year’s theme of walking together as ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.

The exact dates of the October visit have not been confirmed, with further details set to be released next month.

The King and Queen last visited the Holy See earlier this year, where they had a private meeting with Pope Francis, shortly before he died.

This meeting took place during the King and Queen’s State Visit to Italy and following the postponement of the State Visit to the Holy See, which had been due to take place in April.

King Charles has conducted official visits to the Holy See on five occasions throughout his life.

The King and Queen will join Pope Leo XIV in celebrating the 2025 Jubilee Year.

These visits took place in April 1985, April 2005 for the funeral of Pope John Paul II, April 2009, April 2017 and October 2019 for the Canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman.

The Queen joined Charles for the visits in April 2009 and April 2017.

Earlier this month, Pope Leo XIV sent a message to the Royal Family that was read out at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral.

Katherine, Duchess of Kent, became the first senior member of the Royal Family to publicly convert to Catholicism since the Act of Settlement, which bars Catholics from the line of succession.

She converted in 1994 with Queen Elizabeth II’s permission, who saw it as a personal matter of faith.

The statement was read by Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, during the Requiem Mass for The Duchess of Kent.

The Pope said in his message: “I was saddened to learn of the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent, and I send heartfelt condolences, together with the assurance of my prayerful closeness, to Your Majesty, the Members of the Royal Family, and especially to her husband, The Duke of Kent, and their children and grandchildren at this time of sorrow.

“Entrusting her noble soul to the mercy of our Heavenly Father, I readily associate myself with all those offering thanksgiving to Almighty God for The Duchess’s legacy of Christian goodness, seen in her many years of dedication to official duties, patronage of charities, and devoted care for vulnerable people in society.

“To all who mourn her loss, in the sure hope of the Resurrection, I willingly impart my apostolic blessing as a pledge of consolation and peace in the Risen Lord.”
