A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to more than two years behind bars after a fellow train passenger caught him viewing child sexual abuse material on his phone.

David Johnson, from Francis Chichester Way in Wandsworth, received a prison term of two years and three months at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, April 1

The court heard how an alert traveller sitting behind Johnson on a service from Stafford to London witnessed him watching disturbing videos on his device.

Johnson had admitted to six charges of making indecent images of children, alongside two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and one count of arranging or facilitating a child sex offence.

The incident unfolded around midday on September 23, 2025 as Johnson travelled towards the capital.

The witness, seated directly behind him, had a clear view of Johnson’s phone screen and observed him exchanging messages before opening footage depicting a young child being abused.

Johnson then moved to a separate conversation where another person enquired about his preferences, asking “what kinds of videos do you like? I have all kinds”.

His response was chilling: “Just kids videos”.

Deeply disturbed by what he had witnessed, the eyewitness texted his partner to describe the situation. Upon looking up again, he saw Johnson viewing another clip featuring an even younger victim.

So shaken was the passenger that he relocated to a different part of the carriage before alerting British Transport Police through their 61016 text service.

Officers from British Transport Police raced to intercept the train as it pulled into London Euston station, where Johnson was immediately detained.

Body-worn camera footage captured the moment police boarded the carriage and placed him in handcuffs, with Johnson appearing confused and claiming “I haven’t” as officers explained why he was being arrested.

A search of his belongings revealed that even his phone’s wallpaper displayed an indecent image of a child.

Once in custody, Johnson made a telling request to officers, asking for his property back because he “needed to delete some stuff”. He subsequently declined to answer any questions during his interview.

Examination of devices seized from two addresses linked to Johnson uncovered close to 200 indecent images, with 105 falling into category A – the most severe classification.

Investigators also uncovered chat transcripts that exposed the full extent of Johnson’s predatory behaviour.

One exchange revealed he had been communicating with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl and had made arrangements to meet her for sex.

A second conversation with an older woman referenced the same child, with Johnson being told he could not see her as she was unwell. Police subsequently established that the teenage girl never existed.

Johnson was handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must remain on the sex offenders register for a decade.

Detective Constable Victoria Lowth praised the witness whose actions led to the conviction: “The quick thinking and courage of the man who saw Johnson’s phone meant that we were able to quickly arrest him and uncover the scale of his offending.”
